Default Having the AI fight the battles?

I was wondering if there was a way to have the computer control your troops, save the generals unit, for the battle segments in this game. Im aware of the AI control/assist button, but when I select the group and put them under it, they just change their formations and stand there. If I order them to attack under AI assist, they do the same and just stand around.
I'm really curious to find out if there is a way to make them fight, I think it would add a different level of playability, as if you were actually the general and not able to individually control each and every unit, instead issuing general orders having the squad captains (AI) carry them out for you while you observe, and change tactics accordingly. It would certainly up the challenge at the least, as I am aware the AI in this game isn't the greatest ever.
So if anyone has any ideas or suggestions on how this can be done, I appreciate it.

you do know about the button you can check and uncheck at the pre-battle screen where it has the bar and the odds of winning etc, right? it is only there for your allied armies, not the main army doing the attack or defense. that sucks i know, but you can get around it easily like this..

.. so you want to watch your army siege the enemy va AI control? you march your army up to the city you want to assault and siege it. the following turn, you click just the general's unit card alone, then click nearby directly beside your attacking army. then use this single unit to attack the enemy. when the pre battle screen comes up, simple check the AI control box, and watch the battle. you only have to control the general at that point.

    Does this really work?

If you just use a general unit to attack the settlement, the "attack now" button will be grayed out because 1 general unit cannot break walls or gates. I can see it work if you have 1 unit of siege equipment accompany the general....

Also, the rest of the army won't be able to use rams, towers, or ladders because they will be marching onto the battlefield mid-battle....

well then excuse me, one general unit with one infantry unit with one ladder, directly beside the main force who is sieging and is ready to attack. then attack with the general/infantry unit with ladder army, and your main force will be AI controlled.

in field battles what i originally described works, in sieges only do you need an infantry unit w/a ladder. in the field it works perfect.

What's the fun about having the AI fight instead you? Why don't just auto-resolve then? Besides AI control is totally lame.

Be a man, have the balls to click on your units and command them to battle! For honour and glory, my lord!
