'Beat up' tourists: Islamic cleric

Firebrand Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir has called on his young Indonesian followers to attack tourists - including Australians - in a fiery sermon.
In the talk given in October last year Bashir urges his followers to "beat up" western tourists, whom he likened to "worms, snakes and maggots", The Australian newspaper reported on Monday.

"God willing there are none (tourists) here," he told the young Indonesian audience on October 22.
"If there were infidels here, just beat them up. Do not tolerate them.
"Worms, snakes, maggots - those are animals that crawl. Take a look at Bali ... those infidel tourists. They are naked."
Bashir was convicted of conspiracy over the 2002 Bali bombings - which killed 88 Australians - serving 26 months in prison.
Experts have interpreted Bashir's comments as a sign the cleric has become emboldened since being released from prison last year.
The speech was recorded by Australian PhD student Nathan Franklin, who is specialising in Indonesian politics.
"Going to jail, serving a very light sentence, and becoming a media icon - it's the best thing that's happened to him," Mr Franklin said.

2) The Indonesian government obviously provides tacit support for terrorism by doing absolutely nothing to silence people like this.
3) The australian government should send in an SAS sniper and deal with this old bastard once and for all.

The Indonesian government has sentenced several members of Jamaah Islamiyah to death, they can't be that lenient. They probably don't want to anger people, he's very well respected, despite being hateful and cowardly man, it'd be more trouble than it's worth for them. Although he has a large following, his followers like to shout "YEAAAAH!" rather than doing anything.

This should probably be in the Pit, come to think of it.

Most of the Aussies I've met travelling through Asia were hairy arsed rugby player types. Good luck to those skinny Bashir supporters when they decide to have a go at them.!

Indonesia is indeed a supporter of terrorism for allowing free speech. USA and Britain are our terrorist sympathizer friends because they do the same over there. They in fact protect neo-nazi marches in their country. Im sorry if Australians are not familiar with free-speech.

I would love to see Bashir dead. But Indonesia is not a China-like tyrannical police state anymore. We cant kill someone merely because he talk

Lets stop this Indonesia support terrorism nonsense. I dunno how the law works in Aussie but in Indonesia we punish criminals in accordance to their crimes.

Apart from the Balkan Muslims, we Indonesian Muslims are one of the most moderate Muslims in the world. The majority of us have been rejecting the implementation of Shariah for decades for a reason. But truthfully the stupid war in Iraq and the prolonged conflict in Palestine are obviously not helping the situation. They provide a lot of fuel for radical village Imams to burn the anger of simple-minded and poor Indonesian villagers and lead them into thinking that Islam is under attack from Occidental Crusaders.

If Australia wanna help to end this, help us to finance more schools all over the country especially in poor areas. The result of this will benefit both countries.

Perhaps because he hasn't actually committed a proper crime, people always try and say games like manhunt cause murders, but they never try and accuse the developers of the murders they say the game caused. Even they can tell the difference between doing something and suggesting something and an idiot following it.

We have huge problem with drugs trafficking and drugs abuse. Harsh measure is needed to stop it and it actually also benefit Australia as top destination of drugs traffickings from Indonesia and they have never cared about this measure before. The only reason Australians object to this now is because one of their citizens was involved in illegal drugs trafficking case in Indonesia and has been sentenced 20 years in prison instead of faced by a firing squad.

Yes I personally disagree with death penalty for small traffickers because many of those people are forced to sell drugs to make money. But thats the law that has just been implemented since 2000 by our female president who cared so much about our youth. LOL

Lol, no I mean they have so much money that all regional police chiefs are in their pockets but the police need to catch someone so they just take the poor small traffickers and give them the firing squad.

No, no, no man.

9 out of 10 largest companies in Indonesia under Suharto were co-owned by Suharto's relatives and Indonesian Chinese entrepreneurs which for decades fueled hatred of Indonesian Chinese among the majority Indonesian Malays who saw them as leeches who would do anything to get rich including supporting an oppressive dictator.

And when Suharto fell in 1998 there were awful and shameful anti-Chinese riots all over the capital city of Jakarta in which poor and angry Indonesian Malays went on rampages looting and destroying properties and businesses owned by random Indonesian Chinese who were mostly innocent.

So I dont want such mob stuff to happen again.
