    Default Freed slaves

This is really weird. A city revolted, creating an army of freed slaves, all with 8 exp, silver weapons and golden armor. Ok. So I wait for them on a bridge so I can kick their ass with a small force and hopefully get Imperator, but for some bizzare reason the slaves fight more like sacred bands then a mob of unarmored peasents wielding clubs and stones. Stat wise, even with the experience and everything they had something like 16 attack and 14 defense, which is quite mediocre. So how is it possible then, that these slaves butchered my finest warriors in a nearly 1:1 engagement (on the bridge)? A unit of veteran hoplites (19 attack, 28 defense), a unit of gallic swordsmen (13 attack, 25+ defense) + several more smaller units whiped out like nothing while inflicting only small casualties.

I searched the unit descr file to see if they have some weird stats but they weren't there. :hmmm:

Any clues as to what the hell's going on?

Check "Hotfixes" for EB1, there's one about that.

Mistyped lethality value is the chief culprit. The hotfix corrects that.

Where specifically in their EDU entry is lethality? I'd rather change it manually to a smaller number than re-do some of the changes I made to mine (primarily shrinking triarii maniples).

Thanks all, the hotfix did the trick. And by the way, how are free slaves registered in the file? I cant seem to find them under any name.

And while I'm at it, I have another small question. The western most cartheginian city was defended a general with a spartan guard (!), and I was wondering how the heck did he get there, seeing as greek merc generals have horsies.

Do a search in export_units(RTW/EB/data/text) for the name they have in game. And then use the name next to it(the one in the barackets) and search for it in EDU. It will take you to their dictionary entry there.

What was the lethality changed to in the altered EDU?

Never mind, I found it. Their maces had a lethality of 0.9, I changed it to 0.1. They're down as "generic_militia".

Ah, I'd better drop it some more then. That was for their secondary melee weapon, not the missile one, right? Seems most missile weapons have a lethality of 1.

Yes. I may be wrong, but I think missile weapons don't use lethality.

Yep. The blighters simply ignore whatever you write in the EDU and work like the value was 1.

A bit off topic: Is this unit really necessary? They look silly and seem quite unrealistic to me, for the most part. Wouldn't revolting citizens be better represented by levies? And you'd get an additional free unit slot.

(drools at the thought of Indian Pezhetairoi or some sort of original Sardinian levy unit)

From what I've read, they are vital to the game engine, which simply crashes when a city revolts if said units are not present. So, yes.
    believe in nothing.

Not all factions have levies. Romans certainly don't.

    ?

Accensi? ... Leves...? Rorarii? .... even Velites? No idea if they're technically levies or not, but they're only marginally better armed and trained than the Freed Slaves, and could take their place easily, even in Marian or Imperial times.

They're not levies like the Greek or Gallic factions have (who are specifically called "levy spearmen" or "levy hoplites").

OK, so they're not really levies. But they could replace the Freed Slaves anyway, they're similar enough.

"Legion" actually means pretty much "the levy" or thereabouts... the citizen militia, you know.

Anyway, the Apeuletheroi are a proven-to-work solution to the infamous "settlement revolt CTD" issue.
