Playing as Pontus, M/M took a stab at Ankyra. Those Naked Boys handed me my lunch, snatched it back, and ATE IT!!!!. Phalanx- cut threw-em like paper-mache. Four deep Family members. No problem they made horse kabobs. Guess I need to go check out the Gaulish factions....

I noticed that not to long into campains, Ankyra turns Gaulish Green.
Will this happen even if Ankyra is taken by one of the factions????

Gaesatae are a nightmare. Which isn't surprising given they're elites. I soften them up from range long before they get near my lines, otherwise they can and will turn the tide of the whole battle.

That happens when Ankyra revolts, and joins its cultural relatives - the Celts, ie Aedui(/Arverni?).

Those are 'Naked Wildmen" not even quite Gaesatae, but you can recruit them once you have conquered Galatia... and yes, they can revolt to the Gauls if you don't keep them happy, I suggest a real garrison...

I tried taking Ankyra again.................. Let's just say it's humbling. The Wildmen & Company don't play. I tried Mis-direction, isolation. A unit of Wildmen chased my schkermishers, So I ran up their back with 50+ elite horse (FM). If they were'nt busy mincing my schkermishers they would have killed all three FMs. NEVER seen anything like this in my life!!!!!!

Forces were even numbered, and of course they sallied out.

Time to go have a Gaulish experiance.............

As far as Ankyra goes I'm going to give grain, fruits, insence & mur as tribute
to these guys and call it a life. Next victum.............

Gentlemen: Superman with a nuke on a bad hair day could'nt
have stopped these boys......... I'm no Alexander by any means, but I've fought my fair share of battles. Succesfully . Now if javlins & range are their Achillies Heal, okay & thanks. But I tried that for the breif few seconds it took them to close. Remember they charged En-Mass. (sallied forth)

I've never seen anything survive getting rammed by Royal Cav.(up the Bum) let alone turn around and hack them to pieces...

So again I ask where do I get these guys????????

Crazy naked guys on heavy drugs or not, I'm starting to think we have a serious unbalance problem here... any news on whether they will lose that extra HP, or something else is being done to balance them in 1.1?

If you have trouble killing them, you're either playing on way too high battle difficulty level or doing something wrong. I've killed several of them at once with nothing but a few of those Celtic archers, a Leuce Epos or two, and a single Gallic FM. Or out East, some of the Galatian shortsword guys and a Pontic FM (and that was with the old Pontic FamiCav, which were more like heavy skirmishers...). Shoot them in the back, pin with something expendable as necessary, and repeat-charge in the rear with cavalry.

Works for me anyway.

If you think they're "unbalanced", just wait 'till you run into those heavily armoured elite infantry types that shrug off sling bullets like so much light summer rain...

I'm sure they have their own Achielles Heal. Perhaps my experiance is an anomily. Many times I've witnessed supernatural performances from the AI.
It plays its best in its own way, and sometimes throws you curve ball just
to keep you on your toes. My story illustrates the AI telling me that I'm not "ALL That and a Bag of Chips"....

Please don't get the villagers all stirred up. If that town was full of Roman Gladiators I'm sure I'd be singing the same tune, but with Italian flavor.

It's just that I've read at least a half dozen different threads over the last month or so talking about how much ass these guys kick in EB, and how they destroy even the best elite units from "civilized" lands without breaking a sweat... which sounds somewhat unrealistic.

You know, a crazed foaming naked man might be terrifying to lesser soldiers, but if one of those runs towards a highly-trained elite force, all they'll do is shrug, block his blows and cut him to pieces. Even if he feels no pain and keeps fighting, they'll cut him into even smaller pieces, and he won't be able to do much damage after that, no matter how much he cries about it "only being a flesh wound".

Bah. Buncha whiners who don't know how to deal with elite infantry properly. I recently watched a bunch of AS Hypaspistai trot over a bridge through a massive concentration of assorted missiles, followed by several FamiCav, proceed to tear through half my Hayasdan army up to and including killing the FM leading it, and keep on fighting in the middle of nasty axe-toting hillmen long after the whole rest of the Seleukid force was dead or heading for the hills; it took a rear charge from what was left of the heroically dead FM's bodyguard cav to finally break the bastards.

Elite units are supposed to be hardcore.

I was just thanking my lucky stars those weren't the foot-tank Argyraspidai instead.

Also, everybody always goes on about how those Thracian elite dudes with their big-ass rhomphaias chop through everything and whatnot. Bah, I say. Earlier today I slaughtered a bunch with the crude expedient of tying them down with Getokoi Stratiotai, flanking them with those Kostobok axe guys, and ramming the faction leader's Phylakes Daoi up their rear end. The main problem after that was disengaging my guys fast enough they didn't take needless casualties from the Rhomphaiaphorois' "fighting to the death"...

And I've up-statted those guys into proper elite numbers, they're statted like regular infantry in 1.0.

I just did an experiment, and if you rush a unit of 80 "thracian elite dudes with big-ass romphaias", armor and all, against a unit of 60 nekkid wild galatians, the end result is: Thracians, all dead; Galatians, half alive.

So the problem is not that the elite units in general are strong, but that the naked wildmen seem to be considerably stronger than the other elites (I did test them against a couple other units labeled as elites, and the result was basically the same). Even the logical answer against them (missiles) isn't that effective, since they have 2HP and large shields, and shooting at their backs is not a viable option if they're defending a bridge, a gap in a wall, or atop a wall section.

All good points............ however without a time machine i don't think well ever really know....

I have read somewhere that they might have a narrowing of their area of recruitment, like only 2 provinces in gaul, to prevent the AI and the player to spam them. But really, I don't see that unbalance in battle, since they have 2 hp they are particularly susceptible to javelins, personally I would only decrease their armor and defence skill by 1 point each
