Default My cities are rebelling what do I do?

Okay here is my sit. I have am in my 185 turn and play as england. I own western europe, greece, africa, and all of the middle east.

Now here is my problem. I now have trouble with the timurids attacking me and my 180 turn alliance with poland (the megapower of the east) is broken. And all my cities are rebeling. Like 12 cities are rebeling and the next turn 5 of them have been taken completly over by rebels.

I DONT NEED THIS RIGHT NOW! Does anyone have a good strategy on how to "calm" cities down so they dont revolt. I am best friends with the pope and pretty much 90% catholic in all my settlements.

    PLEASE HELP!

Keep your public order intact by:

    Lowering taxes
    Getting public order buildings
Keeping a centralized capital to avoid distance to capital penalties
Keeping counterspies in cities to avoid unrest
    Upgrading cities to prevent squalor
    Installing a chivalrous governor

    Hope this helps.

Some other ways are installing a large garrison or converting the population if they are a different religion.

Or you could take your garrisons (assuming they're somewhat well armed) outside of the cities, tax the place to the hilt (hey, squeeze whatever money you can out of them) and let them revolt/turn rebel.

Recapture them, sack/exterminate them. You get money, a smaller population and problem solved.

That's never a great solution, as your cities will need time to regrow. It's better to use any of the other methods to regain order before resorting to exterminating your people.

But it gets the job done and if the cities aren't in line for an enemy army the rebuilding issue isn't a problem.

But you also waste valuable time and resources getting an army there to retake it, unless you have a large garrison there, in which case, rebellion shouldn't be a problem.

I tend to agree with Bob here this must be a last do or die resort.

The only other thing I would add here is if you were to withdraw and retake & exterminate the population would it not have an effect on the resource pool for recruitment.

Would it not take longer to get the numbers required to train the units their? :hmmm:

Make sure you check settlement details in rebelling settlements as it will help you discover the cause of the unrest. I have noticed that having rebels or enemy armies in territories causes unrest. Once I eliminate them then the public order improves.

It also helps to have your capital in a region with access to sea (can build a port). In Rome they did tests on this and it showed that a landlocked capital gave bigger penalties.
I also don't recommend installing a chivalrous governor as they cause more population growth and will lead to aggrevated problems in the long run. If you've built all public order buildings and a city is hard to control, stall it's growth (or make it go negative).
Avoid building structures that give a health bonus, they don't work in the long run. The exception is the town hall building which also gives a law bonus. The thing about health is that it leads to more city growth and more growth is squalor.

If your public order droped a lot in single turn then prolly it's coz enemy spies infiltrated in your city so counterspying is first measure you should undertake.BobTheChivalrous already said which are all other counter-measures to improve your public order

    good luck

The number one reason for unrest and rebellion for me is enemy spies in my cities, put a few spies in your cities

ok here is the quickest and easiest way.. take everyone out of the city or cities that are rebeling... let them revolt then siege your city and exterminate them... then there shall be ..... peeaacceee....

if there are whole regions who act like that I usually loose my temper and exterminate them too... they usually dont argue with me again...

i say you began a game lacking of luck!

I think even a novice player will be aware of garrosining, health, papal state relation, rebel armies near factors.

    It is just an unluck

check to make sure your king hasnt picked up the "inspires civil war" trait. just found that nasty little surprise id never seen before.

causes all your generals to gain/lose loyalty really really really fast. theyll pick up traits like royalist or rebel (and everything in between)... which will cause their loyalty to either skyrocket or plummet.

had one general get so low on rep that he literally locked the gates to his city, refused to let me control him and put the city happiness at a permanent zero until it eventually revolted. and that caused a chain reaction, with a bunch of other settlements nearby following suit.

eventually stopped the civil war by sending my generals with royalist traits to cities in danger of revolt to replace the dissenting governors (who i ended up having to put on ships to rot, rather than risk more trouble. the ones who did revolt either died in the revolt or set up shop with the rebels)... and then scramble to get back the settlements id lost before my neighbors grabbed em.

oh, this was in SS 5.1 kingdoms though... not sure if that trait exists in vanilla or other mods.

it seems that the best option would be to buld public order buildings and barracks

    taverns-pleasure palace
    garrisons
    mayor's palaces and whatnot
