Default Taiwan presidential election, winner the Nationalist party.

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapc...ons/index.html

TAIPEI, Taiwan (CNN) -- Taiwan voters overwhelmingly elected Nationalist Party candidate Ma Ying-jeou to be president on Saturday, apparently choosing the promise of economic growth through closer ties with China over fears that those ties to the mainland could lead to a loss of independence.

Ma, whose campaign touted the economic benefits of better relations with China, defeated the Democratic Progressive Party's Frank Hsieh, who advocated going slower and holding back in some areas.

    ------------------------------------------

alright, the era of DPP dominating Taiwan's presidential office and parliament is over. The Nationalists took complete control over both offices.

I guess the people of Taiwan has spoken. They want greater economic exchange with China for further benefits (like Ma has proposed) and they want stability in the Taiwan strait.

    not likely.

forced annexing of Taiwan = war

war = no more trade, investment and economic development

no more eco development = everyone pissed and country in turmoi = communist party over.

therefore, communist party = no forced annexing of Taiwan.

Indeed. I think that once China becomes a democratic country with full rights to citizens Taiwan will unite with the mainland peacefully. But that depends on the communists.

    hopefully in my life time.

    again my principle is that:

no unification when china is still not democratic...it's just fair to the people of Taiwan to give up their liberties.

    hm....the Chinese themselves.

without eco development..the commies really lose their last stance of any governing legitimacy. the US army won't be able to do the job of 600 million angry peasants.

Anschluss has a bit of a willingness to it.
For one thing, I wouldn't mind.
All we have to do is acknowledge 1 China and that Taiwan is part of China. Practically nothing else if they keep true to their words (something that the US of A can't even do properly nowadays).

Which I don't think is going to happen even in the event of unification.
Are you aware of the 1992 consensus?

Plus, there is greater evidence that the US has no interest in an independent Taiwan.
All the attempted referendums and statements issued by the last president CSB were either taken back at the first sight of US displeasure and discontinued.

Well guess what, majority of the Taiwanese's ancestors were Han Chinese that fled to the island of Taiwan. When Taiwan became an independent country, they changed it to Taiwanese instead of Chinese.

He means racially I guess, although technically some of the taiwanese are basically KMT chinese in exile...the ones that managed to flee to taiwan anyway.

And taiwan is still under the name Republic of CHINA, so technically, it is correct to call them chinese.

But WHICH chinese is another matter.

I hope that the relation between ROC and the PRC can be something like the USA and the UK in the near future.

It's very difficult for a foreigner to understand the "One China" implicit agreement between Taiwan and China.

Under the One China Policy both Republic of China (Taiwan) and People's Republic of China (mainland China) can use the name China (and claim they are China) under different connotations.

The first time I arrived in Taiwan I opened one of these airport guides, the ones usually containing factoids about each country; the first lines read:

"Republic of China is one of the biggest countries in the world extending from the Mongolian steppes to the Pacific..."

    and I was like, WTF?

Then I realised that this was a convenient accomodation for all involved. Taiwan can model itself as China as long it does not dispute that China is one...

not that they can model themslves...they have always been modeling themselves as ROC....long before the commies. They still claim Outer Mongolia, which was a part of ROC.

Taiwan will unite with China in the next 60 years. When depends on when China becomes fully democratic.

Yet again, economy is the name of the game! Taiwan is econimically locked without China and the people seem to be willing to sell themselves for more economic possibilities. Some may say that this is their only option, but it still seems very naive to me to think that the annexation of Taiwan, first economically of course, will not come follow.
