What do you all think should be a good faction to play other then Rome.
I generally have trouble with Gaul and Germina, don't know about the Iberians, really haven't played much of Eastern Infantry other then in Vanilla RTW.

Pontos is a really difficult - but fun - campaign. They're in a pretty protected location with an alliance to the Seleucids at the start. They're a cool mix of Greek, Eastern, and Barbarian cultures.
I've also enjoyed campaign as Pegamum. Nice little Greek state. Their location means you can expand in Asia Minor AND Greece, Macedon, and Thrace...they get normal Successor units but I love their tenacity.![]()
the Iberians are a fun faction to play as.
Greece Is fun with all the different city hoplites.
Armenia: You get a great start position, you have phalanxes, cataphracts, horse archers, and legionary-type infantry... That's all you need for a great campaign, and only Armenia can offer it.![]()
Under the patronage of John I Tzimisces
I'm having a grand ol time at the moment finishing up my Bosporan campaign. I really like this faction.
Syracuse or Epirus, But I recommend Epirus first...
The unique RS factions are Syracuse, Pergamon and the Bosporan Kingdom -- three very fun campaigns...
The Getae offer quite an interesting campaign, they start off with a secure position deep in the balkans and have quite a unique barbarian roster.
the Greeks have always appealed to me more, but Syracuse sounds interesting (well they are still Greeks but uh..). you're in this island in the middle of the Mediterranean safe from all danger and you can start expansion anywhere, more than likely island hop. you're the Japan of the Mediterranean!
It's only secure until the Macedonians come and say 'hello'......
Not if you play with the Alexander exe. There are naval invasions (if the faction is set up to do naval invasions)!
I've played most of the factions and my favorite is still - Macedon. As others have posted it's central - you have a choice of where to expand. Now the landbridge neat Byzantium has been removed you're fairly safe from the Asian shore.
The other advantage of Macedon is that you don't lose the ability to retrain your units after the Imperial Reforms kick in.
Carthage is fun as well - you can do the 2nd Punic War!

Point taken. but then you're a useless commander if you cant beat Macedon with hordes of barbarians. Its like hammer and anvil tactics....just without the hammerBesides I have a little exploit of the game mechanics that lets me deal with phalanxes without any flanking if needs be...
Well I know the topic starter asked "besides Rome" but Rome is simply the best and coolest faction out of all
Has lotsa named legions, strong cav ("auxilia" barb cav, legion. cav etc etc), has lots of different archers (as in, the named ones) AND has access to cataphract units in the eastern AORs...
gotta love it![]()
I was playing around with Parthia today...man, they cut everyone down. I might try these guys out first when RS2 comes out. They look even more awesome, and there's no more pink pajamas!
I wrote an little ditty in the AAR forum from it, check it out!
The GCS is a very fun faction to play.
"So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show."

Personally, Carthage is a blast to play. You can roleplay it a bit as if Carthage had triumphed in the Punic wars and forged an empire. Plus they have a wonderful reskinned unit roster.
"I used to eat people, but now I'm full."
I've never played as Carthage, but they sound good.
Carthage is a blast -- you start with a spread out little empire, with wars in Sicily, Africa and Iberia... lots of strategic opportunities.
Yeah, safe from all danger except the ROMANS, the CARTHAGINIANS, and the damn FREE PEOPLES!!!you're in this island in the middle of the Mediterranean safe from all danger
