How many of you know of these guys? They are my favorite band, bar none. Their musical statements are simple, direct, and powerfully emotional. This music helped me survive some really bitterly depressing years of my life. What do you think?

I'm not such a fan of him with his own band, though it is good. To me it is totally eclipsed by the supergroup that is The Travelling Wilburys.
Yeah I know it, I think it's quite good, but I have to agree with Ummagumma.
Tom Petty is a nice, clever guy. The music is simple, elementary rock in good sense. I like it. Its really a gift to relieve depression.

Overated baggage in the Travelling Wilburys and Don't Come Around Here No More was utter garbage .
Dull and uninspiring in my opinion
It's the same each time with progress. First they ignore you, then they say you're mad, then dangerous, then there's a pause and then you can't find anyone who disagrees with you.

Did they do "Free Fallin'"? I listened to Cruise singing that in Jerry Maguire, but when I heard the entire song performed I thought it sucked. I'm not saying I have good taste in music (I love 80s/90s film soundtracks and Kenny Loggins for the most part) but that song just stuck me as so insipid as to actually cause genuine annoyance.
Overrated. He hits the nail on the head with Full Moon Fever and Into the Great Wide Open, however every song sounds the same. His greatest hits album is the only cd of his worth buying other than these two as every song he writes seems more of the same. It's either a gem or it isn't.
Give me the Eagles any day.
One thing is for certain: the more profoundly baffled you have been in your life, the more open your mind becomes to new ideas.

Let's think the unthinkable, let's do the undoable. Let us prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.
Naw, Joe is good. Breakdown is good. Tom Petty is good.

For those of you who think all of Petty's work is the same, find a copy of The Last DJ (or get it on iTunes). It is rather different from most of his work, and is an entertaining attack on the record industry. Plus, the guitar work is really good listening.
I like some of his work but I only own 3 songs, so I compare all of his work.
I thought the Heartbreakers was the one with Johnny Thunders?
I love em! Absolute quality music. It'll All Work Out is my favourite song of theirs. I also like Tom Petty without the Heartbreakers - Square One being a great song.

I've just gotten into his music. Great to listen to when you're just cruisin down the road.
