    Default RS In Latin

Following the blessing of this project by dvk, I can start attempting to bring together a team to translate RS (starting with 1.5, and hopefully having a full project for 2) into Latin.

It is a rather large undertaking, nonetheless, I think it will add extra depth and detail to Roma Surrectum and will complement the wonderful work that has already been put into the Roman faction. Hopefully this project will find support among the Latin-loving community, but also I think it can be a great resource for those who want to improve their Latin skills.

There are alot of text files to translate, with the work ranging from full unit descriptions, to just translating one-word-at-a-time work, such as the weather and event titles etc.

If you would like to help with the translation, please post below.

    Thanks,
    Mattius.

TEXT FILES THAT NEED TRANSLATING BY DIFFICULTY - Found in *Roma Surrectum Directory*\data\text

    EASY
    building_battle.txt
    climates.txt
    expanded_bi.txt/expanded.txt
imperial_campaign_regions_and_settlement_names.txt (these all may already be in Latin)
    shared.txt
    strat.txt (partly MEDIUM)

    MEDIUM
    battle.txt
    battle_event_subtitles.txt
    cursor_action_tooltips.txt
    event_titles.txt
    export_VnVs.txt
    menu_english.txt
    quotes.txt
    tooltips.txt

    HARD
    campaign_descriptions.txt
    diplomacy.txt
    event_strings.txt
    export_ancillaries.txt
    export_buildings.txt
    historic_events.txt
    export_units.txt
    prebattle_speeches_subtitles.txt
    landmarks.txt

As you can see, quite alot, and quite alot that is hard... If you decide to start work on a certain file, can you please leave a message in this thread, so that we don't get duplication. I am currently doing export_units.txt

    A few notes for translation.
Do not translate Epriot stuff in the files. It's just a waste of time as they are deleted for RS2.

I suggest, though it is open to debate, just translating things from a Roman perspective i.e. just the text you'll come across playing as the Romans. Don't translate other faction specific building descriptions, or prebattle battle speeches, for example. I don't want to ostracise other faction users, but there is ALOT of text to do. Alot. Can do other factions in the future, hopefully.

    Are you talking about voices?
    Or all the info?
Because that would be cool on the game map!

All the text in-game. Not voices. Subtitles could be done though, so you hear them in English, read in Latin.

I've been doing Latin for 5 years and am doing it at university next year too!

I do definitely need a hand, so please do help!

I'll list all the text files in the first post by difficulty, and then people can choose what they want to do based on their skill level.

Thank's for the luck, will need it. Care to get involved?

Just be aware that a lot of the Roman units will be somewhat changed for RS2.

Ah, thanks tone. I'll get most of the basic stuff out the way, then it should be relatively quick to add in the new stuff when RS2 comes out.

I'll be happy to help. If you can forward me a .txt, I'll get started. I only see the file, not the text itself.

For those who don't know me, I go by the call sign Legion in RTW, Halo, and COD4. You can always reach me at my clan website:
    http://tenthlegion.20.forumer.com
You will have to have me clear your registration first, though.
Also, you can always visit my school website and forum:

As you can see from my website, I am an actual Latin teacher, and have been for six years now, and did my Master's in Latin at University of Florida.

Glad to see this going on...and if you need any classical Latin spoken as well, I'd be glad to help, as most people miss certain key pronunciation issues and make it turn out to sound medieval.

I think using Itailian would help in the obvious absence of a latin person. I'm sure the oral communication in Rome:Total War can be Itailian, no?(for the Itailians of course!) With the fact Romans spoke latin and Rome was in Italy and the language is very close, it would add to the feel. If you understand it(me or Itailians) it will of course decrease your feel a little bit, but remember Itailian is a Romance language, so it would sound at least close(especially for those who dont understand it) We could even add some secret little lines in there like "Noi abbiamo fatto sesso" or "Va Fanculo"

Well can you add files in in which someone is speaking latin? And I can't speak latin:p

Mi scusi. Itailiano "va bene" ma non incredibile. Tu sono bouna. Spiacente, fratello! Mi puzzo e non capisco Latino.

You'll be surprised how close your Latin is, so don't worry. Happy to oblige!

Sorry for the intrusion, but does this mean that all in-game text (ie, unit and building descriptions) will be in Latin? If so, wouldn't that create a lot of unecessary confusion among the RS players who aren't familiar with Latin?

Be an interesting option. I'd be willing to help, but I've only learnt about 2 years of Latin, so I'm not that good...

    Yes, yes, entirely optional.

mileslegionis, I will forward you a file now, but I do advise downloading RS, it's a great mod, and you can then get all the files you want.

Xavier, if you want to try one of the files from the EASY section, as long as you have a dictionary, you'll do fine. building_battle.txt is just a list of building names.

EDIT: I can't seem to attach a file to anything other than this thread, and the export_buildings.txt file is too big...
