Exactly what it says in the title, almost exclusively in the battle sections of the game.
I'm running a 3.2 64 bit AMD
2 gig of ddr400 corsair ram
Geforce 8600GTS Sli
And I patched 1.3 then 1.5

They do have their glitches. Save all the time and reload when you get one. Like you said, random.
Its fairly frequent though, not something like a glitch, I know having played RTW for many an hour years ago and never encountering it.
Do you have auto-save off and never do quick save?
Also make sure that your graphics card isn't getting too hot. If the game crashes in a middle of a battle then that's probably the cause.
I've recently been plagued by that and a CTD at the end of the battle (randomly). It's almost as if there is a difference in resolution between the strategy map and the battle map - which is a no-no.
I've set my resolutions lower and graphic details down as well - but I still get the CTD.... It isn't consistent.
I've also experimented with upping the size of the page file - one theory I had was that the game was trying to update a file somewhere and had problems doing that. I have more than ample disk space.
As others have recommended I've turned off autosave and don't do quicksaves.
These things are set to plague us...

In the battle sections, is it always a set time when it crashes? Do you have the same units on the battlefield when it crashes? Have you reinstalled the game since the time when you played "many an hour?" If it's the latter two, maybe it's because you have a corrupt install.
There are also problems with memory leaks causing you to use up too much of your RAM if you continuously play more than 2 or 3 hours at a time and it may crash then. Since the battles are usually the more intense moments, they are usually when it happens.
I use autosaves and quicksaves almost exclusively. They've never caused me any sort of problem. Guess it just depends on the person's own computer.
Just an aside, but it may be related to my first point in this post, but when I first got RTW on this computer about six months ago, as I haven't played RTW for at least six months, I played for hours at once (RTW is very addicting). I happened to see crashes sometimes, especially in battles. Nowadays, however, I've only gotten, maybe, four or five crashes in the past two months. And I believe two of those were just right when I started up RTW. However, I don't play for hours at a time anymore. I got work to do or I just get bored and go play something else after playing for only an hour or so. So I'm guessing the memory leak problem doesn't manifest itself.
I am wondering what, if anything, worked to solve this problem for you Seneca. If you could reply and let us know that would be rather helpful.
I have the same problem. I can say for certain it is not the RAM, resolution, or overheating.
The only option is to disable quick & auto saves. But I am afraid of playing again only to waste my time and run into the CTD again.
so if you could reply seneca that would be great.
