Unlocking factions

Not sure where this should go but I have a quick question.
Played the Britianna Campaign, liked Scotland and so tried to get them to play as them on the Grand Campaign and was under the impression you had to defeat them in the GC. I played as England on easy/easy and quickly wiped them out (Had a little message about my people having celebrations about it), and then tried to start a new Campaign, but I couldn't play as Scotland.
Now I was wondering, am I under the wrong impression about having to wipe them out, or do I need to finish the Campaign (I quit a few turns after wiping out Scotland)?
My friend also mentioned that if I win the GC on short I unlock all factions, is this also true?

Yeah, winning a short campaign should unlock all factions.

you can unlock the factions by being a H4X0R and changing the game files
if you go to your root directory (for the original MIITW), then something like data => world => maps => campaign => imperial_campaign and open descr_strat.txt
move the faction you want to play as from the "unlockable" section to the "playable" section, making sure the syntax is correct. save and VIOLA! new faction in the menu!
