I just bought the game I like to know a little about it before I play it.
What is the strongest infantry unit and what faction gets them?
And which is the most powerful cavalry unit?

Depends. If you get the Stainless Steel mod, which I recommend, the strongest cavalry is definitely Lancers.
No I mean with the expansion pack, but no mods.

Vanilla : Tsar Guards.
"He who controls the past controls the future.’ (George Orwell)
Infantry=Denmark,England
Calvary=France,Poland,Hungary,Byzantine
Quite wrong really. For one, Tsars Guard can destroy any unit as charging calvary. Also, they can melee any unit down. (Yes, this includes easly destroying Tercio Pikemen and other pikemen.)
Tsars Guard are absolutely amazing for anything. Too bad not that many people notice that Russia has this completely overpowered unit. It's so much better than Lancers and Gothic Knights. Lancers/Gothics can't melee their way out of a paper bag either. They don't use shields! However, Tsars Guard do! So yes, Tsars guard is the best melee unit and the best cavalry unit!
If you count them out though.. the best melee unit is Venetian Heavy Infantry. Really, try both those units out. The VHI will impress you against all other infantry. Tsars Guard will impress you against everything.
ehm you've forgotten the Holy Roman Empire man...strong in all fields!!!
30BC: Ottaviano Augusto becomes the first Imperator, in his 44 years of principate he will bring to the empire peace and prosperity!
70AD: Vespasiano is the winner of first great empire's civil war,rebuilding Roman world after the Nero's dark ages.
98AD: Traiano becomes imperator after that the senateman Nerva adopted him,he will start a gold age for the empire getting it to biggest extension!! 117AD-180AD Adriano,Antonino Pio and Marco Aurelio administrate the empire during his richest and most pacific period, with their good administration Rome lives its golden age.
193AD: Settimio Severo wins the civil war started after the death of Commodo starting the Severan dinasty, his heirs will not be as good as him. 252-285AD Rome lives the peak of III century's crisis,onli the emperor Aureliano will be able to reunite the empire breacked in 3 parts and the great reformer Diocleziano will give to Rome militar,politic and social cohesion after decades of caos. 325AD:Costantino rules alone over the empire and christianity is for the first time accepted by the imperial government.
je sorry, the best infantry unit are Peasants. The AI struggles to chase them down while you flank your cavalry into the chasers![]()

The strongest infantry unit would probably be either Jannisary heavy infantry for the Turks or Dismounted Conquestidores for Spain and Portugal. But my favorite is the Varangian Guard for the Byzantines which is very cheap considering how good they are. For cavalry I would say the strongest is a tie between the Heavier Mamluks whos name I forget for Egypt the Tsars Guard of Russia and the Mongol Khans Guard. But I don't play any vanilla campaigns just online as they got way too easy.
"July 14, 2008: I think this is a case where Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae are fundamentally sound. They're not in danger of going under. They're not the best investment these days from a long term standpoint going back. I think they are in good shape going forward. They're in the housing market. I do think their prospects going forward are very solid."

For HI-on-HI action, The Turks' Janissary Heavy Infantry (JHI) are probably the best. However, the JHI are extremely vulnerable to arrow fire and cavalry charges. If I had to rank the top infantry in cost effectiveness (most bang for the buck) I would say:
1.) VHI (Venice)
2.) English Armored Swordsmen (EAS, England)
3.) JHI (Turks)
For cav, I do not know, but the game makers claim that France has the best cavalry in the West. The Turks get a good cav unit also. Compare to Tsar's Guards:
(All info is from brandybarrel's M2TW FAUST)
Tsars Guard (Russia) attack1=14/5; attack2=14/4; defense=8+7+4; morale=11; cost = 840/320.
Chivalric Knights (France) attack1=13/8, attack2=14/4; defense = 8+5+4; morale = 11; cost = 930/250.
Noble Knights (France) same stats as CK, except cost=930/320.
Quapukulu (Turks) attack1=13/6, attack2=13AP/4; defense = 8+6+4; morale = 11; cost = 1100/250.
The cost for ten turns for each of these is:
TG = 3720; NK = 3810; CK = 3180; QP = 3350.
THe TG are clearly a superior buy to the NK, but it gets more interesting with the Chivalric Knights: Would you rather have 7 units of CK or 6 units of TG? Hmm... and take a look at the Quapukulu: With their armor piercing secondary weapon and their low upkeep, they are clearly the best buy of the lot. Man for man, they appear to be better than the Tsar's Guards. Anyone done the testing?
So, for cav, I'd rank them:
1.) Turks
2.) France
3.) Russia

It's just that Tsars Guard are so good in Melee as well. I wish Gothic Knights and Lancers used shields in melee... they would be so much better. I hate using something just for charging. Of course without pikes you must use Tsars Guard as more of an anti calvary really.. so I can see why they did it as a balancing issue.
guys read better, most of u name a cav unit while the op asked about a inf unit. back on topic, it really depends for example varangians might be inferior against VHI but u can get them very early if u play your cards right. the best would be either VHI or JHI in my opinion. btw I think u misspelled your nickname, it is Hannibal Barca![]()

Venice's Hammer dudes? I forget the anme :/
O Rly? I don't see any misspell. Would it have anything to do with this line " Last edited by eggthief : Today at 09:45 PM." from my previous post?
@Archus: yes those
Anyway... Barc, u shouldn't aim for a faction with the best unit, cause even a unit of peasants in the hands of a player is better than a unit of dism chivalric knights in the hands of the AI.

hey hannibal, finally moved on from rome, nice.
I personally love the english armored swordsmen as they are a sick unit and belojng to one of my favorite factions.
The best faction infantry, not necessarily the strongest, is Milan with its Italian Spear Militia. The Xbows are decent too!![]()
They're not sick. They are top-notch defensive heavy infantry and sickly cheap (150 upkeep) for that.
Compared only to Moorish dis. Christian Guard (16/23 for 175 upkeep) when we're talking about cost-effectiveness.
As for strongest cavalry unit, send any faction's general to the far east or deep egypt and get some mercenary elephants with cannons on their backs.
Beat that >:-].
