    Default Best Friends

I've been doing a campaign with Scotland using Deus Lo Vult. I have conquered England so I'm already set for a while. Now then my nearest allies, The Flemish, are under constant attack by the large French empire and my friends are constantly bankrupt. Out of good will I have been giving them 2-3k in florins every turn and finally I offered an attack on france, moving quickly on Caen skyrocketing my relations with the flemish to perfect.

Now I ask has anyone kept their alliances strong throughout their ENTIRE grand campaign, maybe even conquering all the world except your allies? I have never seen the AI NOT backstab me at some point or another and for once I hope my generosity will not go unnoticed by my friends.

No, the AI eventually get jealous and attack for no apparent reason. I always move quickly to destroy them and try to make them an example to everyone else.

Yeah like the AI are smart enough to realize your example.

The thing is the AI is that stupid it doesent realize that even though they only have one settlement left and 3 units to thier name they still want to war with you. Even if you offer them 30,000 florins to ceasfire and they decline.

And are totally oblivious that your armies outnumber them 500:1

Reminds me of one campaign I did with the HRE. I had grown powerful, my empire expanding in all directions (I had destroyed Milan and Denmark first so I was a massive wall of Germans) and I had taken the west (france and england) eventually. Anywho I was warring with Spain and they had one settlement left on the Iberian Penninsula. I randomly felt warm hearted and offered them ALL (ALL) of the settlements on the Iberian Penninsula, 50,000 florins, ceasefire, trade rights and map info. The bastards for some reason think this was a bad deal and reject it with no further proposals..I enjoyed exterminating their last settlement.

Lol, yeah man i try to hold myself back from doing that becuase once you kill every living thing around you the game becomes pretty damn boring.

But at the start of the grand campaign i love when Milan stabs me in the back [every time] becuase i take great joy in destroying them utterly and very quickly. And i suppose this relates to what Pontifex was saying, It would be fantastic if the AI acknowledged your demonstration of power and actually had an effect [instill fear in your enimies] - whatever.

But one thing is for certain the AI definetly needs tweaking, more so on the campaign map than the actuall battle map.

Ditto, whenever I play a catholic faction I alliance Papal first thing and give them every city I don't want, by the end he is always from my country and we kill Muslim factions together...

You can gift the papacy settlements and make them an empire out of provinces you conquer, this way, you can truly keep a trustworthy friend that you dont have to worry about backstabbing you and invading your lands!

I'm going to do this with my current game as Portugal; might remove Milan, Sicily and Venice from the game, and give the entire Italy and Sicily to the Papacy. Just for the heck of it ..

The papacy ruins the point of trying to keep alliances strong, those bastards are too easy to keep happy.

true, i have always managed to keep the pope on side.
also if you ally with someone but dont share a border (so long as they dont get conquered by someone) then that could last
eg currently i am allied (as scotland) to byzantium and egypt, and that seems to be working well, and i control loads of land (france and spain and britain and i am now pushing into germany and italy)

I also doubt they'd cross a continent just to attack you..along with your non-allies.
