    Default realistic army setups

    has anyone compiled a list of what all the factions historical army setups were for house rule purposes? i know there is one which lists what a roman legion/consular army should look like and who can command them but are there any more?

    i wanna start a campaign as either the arverni or macedonia so what house rules do people use with these factions?

    It's more difficult because there aren't as many sources on non-Roman army compositions. Not least because Roman commentators didn't take quite the same interest in them.

    To some specific examples, I don't believe Carthage had standard armies; they relied a lot on foreign and mercenary troops, so each army would have been unique. There might have been a small Punic core to it, but otherwise it would be whatever was available.

    I'd have said for a lot of barbarian armies, again no standard pattern, but a small core of nobles (cavalry and elites) with lots of levy troops and skirmishers.

    Hellenic factions probably had something more like a standard issue.

    It's a good question, mind.

    When 1.1. is released, you can check out realistic and historical armies in the Historical Battles. The battle editor lets you use correct numbers, something that is impossible to do in the campaign.

    Right now we have Camillan, Polybian, and Marian Romans. We have of all the Hellenistic Kingdoms and Carthage. We have Celtic, Lusitanian, German, and Nomad armies.

    Besides that, we dont only show you how the army was composed and the formations, but thanks to the script we show you how the army was used.

    This is better than any Historical Army Guide that can be done.

    So if you fight the AI in a historical battle then they will fight just like they would've done?

    Yeah. For historical battles you will not see the stupid things the AI does.

    That's well and good, but 1.1 isn't here yet. So in the meantime if you've got access to decent army rosters and formations, be kind enough to share them.

    How difficult is it to write some stuff from the material you obviously already have? Especially given 1.1 isn't going to be any time soon, is it?

    If you mean the ones in that file, I can tell you what they were, since they're based in part on my guide of old.

    Camillian consular army

    Roman core:
    1 General (older family member)
    1 "Tribune" (younger family member) or 1 Equites
    2 Principles
    2 Hastati
    1 Triarii (or 2 if you've halved the size of the unit)
    1 Accensi
    1 Leves
    1 Rorarii (I often don't bother, though you should)

    Socii alae:
    2 Samnite Medium Italian Spearmen or Pedites Extraordinarii*
    2 Samnite Mercenary Spearmen or Samnite Heavy Infantry or Lucanian Light Infantry*
    1 Hellenic Skirmisher or Heavy Hellenic Skirmisher or Mercenary Peltasts
    1 Gallic Slinger or Gallic Archer
    1 Campanian Equites or Greek Medium Cavalry or Gallic Mercenary Cavalry

    *Basically some mix of two each of any of the above

    Then deploy something like this:

    --Sli-----Lev-------Pel--------Sli
    Cav--AL------Has------Has------AL---Cav
    --AH-----Pri-------Pri-------AH
    ------Ror----Tri---Gen---Tri

    AL=Allied Light infantry
    AH= Allied Heavy infantry
    Sli=Slingers
    Pel=Allied skirmishers

    My Polybian force isn't much different (aside from replacements for Camillian Hastati/Principes/Triarii/Equites with Polybian ones), except the Roman core has no Rorarii, and you replace the Leves with Velites. When your army has been stationed away in the provinces for a while, you might start replacing the allied parts with local troops rather than continually sending replacements (though you still do this for the Roman core).
