Rome Total War gold crashs

Ok I got the Rome Total War Gold off of steam, ive been meaning to try this series and rome is the one that first interested me in so i though lets play it first. It crashes every so often on the battle map, first the game seems to run 20x faster than normal then it just crashs.

Here are my system specs

AMD Athlon x2 4200
eVga 8800GS
2gb DDR2 667
80gb hard drive

is there anything there that could cause this and if so whats a fix

How does it run 20x faster than normal?

like in walk speed the units can cross the battle map in 30 seconds making it totally unplayable

Are you running on vista? Maybe you have to switch the thing to compatibility mode. I don't know.

Dual core CPU. Make sure you go to AMD's website and download the latest driver as well as the AMD Dual Core Optimizer.

This game has a problem with dual core CPU's, like alot of games from that time period.
