For the record Macedonian Phalangites who fought in a Syntagma (probably closer to the date) fought underhand.
Greek Hoplitai fought in a Phalanx and used the Overhand Formation.

After Greece became Macedonian-ised the Hoplite began becoming extinct.

I respect a reenactors view but there is overwhelming evidence to the fact that they held them overhand.

In fact the reason the Ancient greeks trained a lot, was precisely to have the strength to hold the spear overhand. They were also holding them at an angle so as to avoid hurting the lines in the back when their doru spear would be pulled back to prepare for another thrust.

Read ancient writings, ancient poetry,download audio lectures , read books...thare is every single evidence cofirming underhand.Xenophon confirms hoplites "resting spears on ground and shoulder then lowering spears and advancing"
The only "excuse" for overhand grip is so called "getting over shield" during pushing match...wich never hapened.
Othismos is missintepertation....of word wich is used for advancment or pressing upon the enemy and not like literal physical push.
There was no physical shoving of hoplites and therefore no overhand.
Reenactors didn't used 2.5-2.7 meter long spears but shorter versions (jawelin lenght 1.7 - 2m).
I tried overhand with 2.5m long pole...and it is impossible to control once it bounces off and impossible to hold it firmly.
You can not train joints, no traning will make your anatomy physicly different.Joint is a joint....and it can break during big leverage....wich overhand grip exactly does that...it strains joints....and do not engage muscles.
Key factor are muscles...and holding overhand strains joints unlike underhand where forearm and biceps muscles are engaged along with hip movement as main motor for strong thrust....wich is the most stable for hoplite.

i was under the same impression.There are lots of possible interpretations of the history as the materials are contradittting eeach other.Anyway we are not able till now to remake animations so we will use the EB ones and so overhand
