Default America won't fall anytime soon.

this seems to be a constant theme around here that America is on the verge of collapse or heading that way. Some people seem to think that because we've had one disasterous presidentcy that all of a sudden the US is starting to fracture. Doesn't it seem more likely that the US may not always be the lone superpower, but it will stay at one of the top positions for a long long time. As we can see throughout history, any nation that is united enough, can protect itself from enemies outside and within and has plenty of natural resources, can survive just about any event and rebound. We are still the breadbasket of the world, the leader in technology and have oodles of natural resources to tap as other areas are forced to rely more and more on export.

so with that saids, i see no signs that America will lose its top dog status anytime soon nor face collapse. It seems America is actually one of the most protected nations from collapse of any on this planet. just remember we have been through many more then 5 major economic depressions and survived just fine, dont count us out just yet.

I would agree with you if it werent for this. In a survey of 3500 military officers a majority agreed our military was in better shape five years ago. We have over 700 bases in 130 countries. The Pentagon said Our military would not be able to fight off an invasion of our borders. The dollar is declining rapidly and finally a 9 Trillion Dollar Debt and growing.

Circumstances are different this time and I believe the outcome will be too.

Even if we are going to fall, the signs of decline are not yet present. Once the signs are present, even if they are irreversible, would give us the cause to begin to worry.

As I see it, without us the world wouldn't be able to survive, so we're okay for now.

    Maybe in 50-100 years.

I guess if 60% of the Military of a country is at the other side of the world its for sure difficult to stop an invasion

but who should invade the USA?
    And for what reason?
So the chance that another nation attacks america is.... well it depends if you believe in Aliens then it could happen
if you don't believe in aliens its impossible.

The Problem is not Military the Problem is the economy
Your econmy (Like the economy of every other Western Nation)
depends on cheap oil and cheap chinese labour.

But your real problem is that
You are running into a financial crisis because you are living on debts and that only works as long as the Music plays but when the music stops you got a big problem. and Music is getting lower.

oil is a problem but not a nation destroyer for us. since we are sittting on a 200 year supply of coal considering our current consumption of oil. so what happens when oil runs out elsewhere? well then the US can dictate market prices on alternative fuel sources.

like i said in OP, we are sitting on lots of natural resources, we're a long way off from turning into japan.

Imagine having to pay 10 dollars for gas because the most countries refuse to trade with us. Then adjust it for inflation. People used to cart wheelbarrow loads of money. We'll carry around money by the TRUCKloads.... oh wait we won't be able to pay for gas... lol

I would suggest we all risk falling failing some miraculous technological breakthroughs, where there is some optomism.

Economies are on the verge of a large recession which from what I can tell has been instigated by poor government and poor strategies in economic planning and the finance companies digging themselves pits.

The USA has already lost some of it's importance - it's not like China can be ordered around by the USA. Plus, Europe is starting to dig its heels in and go off on its own direction. African and South American countries are beginning to look to China as well.

when could we order them around exactly? Or order everyone around in the world? In the seventies it was widely believed that the USSR was the way of the future. During WW2 we hardly maintained the dominance we have today. During the 50's-60's we were behind the reds in space exploration and needed a new "whim" in kennedy to catch us up... Even the cuban missle crises saw us giving up ground in th face of soviet aggression.

Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is Im not. I honestly feel that America is the best country and all other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

As far as the Chinese go, any "fall" of America happens and not long thereafter, the "fall" of China will be occurring as well.

America is on the verge of collapse. Coming this fall America and the global financial system will break. Trillions upon trillions in derivatives - 500 trillion will be lost. Forget the world that has existed since WWII it's a new game. The battle for survival will get deadly.

Sounds like your advertising a movie...I think that if America fell, China would probably be soon to follow, and the world would then be in trouble.

    But, you never know.

The decade after the fall of the Soviet union was an American decade - the USA was so dominant in the world, who could possibly stand up to it and hope to have any sort of wealth / status / friends left?

I know that the USA has never ordered countries around, but the influence it wielded was immense. What I am saying is that with the growth of China's economy, countries that in the past would look to America for investment are now looking to China, causing the influence of the USA over many third world countries to be diminished.

Europe also relied on the USA for protection from the Soviet Union, and due to that the USA had a huge influence over European direction. Because of the demise of the Soviets, Europe, though wandering around in bemusement for a while has started to gather itself, and a lot of it's policies are going in different, and even opposite direction to the USA. Whereas once the world looked to USA for initiative and leadership, eyes are now turning away from it - just look at the environment for one.

What you are basing your assertion off of is growth rates not growth capabilities. We don't know what china can do but it's realistic to suspect their sunset isn't overly too far away given investment and outsourcing into Africa.

But hasn't the USA done the very same thing into China? Why then, is the USA's sunset not near?

Yes we have, but we've peaked at a higher level. The best way to explain it is all economies have a ceiling, given institutions, laws, culture, numbers of people, wealth etc. that ceiling is almost preset. Given our policies and our wealth and capital accumulation our cieling is higher than china a socialized country. Does their numbers of people give them advantage? Yes it does in that category, but our capital mobility does the same to a greater degree.
