Default Is it just me or is MTW2 pants compared to RS?

Why is it that i keep coming back to RTW- and particularly RS mod? I re-installed MTW2 in order to try out Broken crescent mod. Okay great work on the units in the mod etc..and I am not knocking their mod. But MTW2 is odd looking graphics. Yes they look plush and the vegetation looks realistic but the armies just dont look like armies. It hard to explain. Even a full stack in MTW2 looks sort of lightweight, where as in RS a full legion stack of 10 cohorts with 4 auxilia infantry, archer units and cavalry actually looks like a huge army even is its only 3000+ men.

In MTW2 the same amount of men just does not look the same.

For this reason I am not sure Rome mods for MTW2 are going to be all that great. I saw a preview pick of Hastati done on the MTW2 engine and while they look cool and their shields have glorius detail, I am not sure they will feel like massive armies.

I dont really like the M2TW armies either. I dunno why, the battles just dont seem as fun and your armies dont appear to be all awesome and glorious.

It might have something to do with the skins, the clone armies from RTW made armies look more "elite" in my opinion, tho less realistic.
And many M2TW units look really strange, their faces seem all somewhat "eastern", maybe "slavic" and seemingly ugly.

The fighting/micromanaging itself also isnt as fun to me at least. Cavalry (even with the latest patch) doesnt work nearly as well as in RTW and to a lesser extent in RS.

Also the time period seems simply more fun, phalangites, legions etc seem way cooler than those wannabe soldiers who are no more than ugly-faced idiots with a spear+shield, no armour and brownish clothes.
Even the "best" units in M2TW dont seem really cool to me.

You are comparing different things. A game compared to a mod of another game. A more realistic comparison is between vanilla versions of RTW, RTW BI, RTW Alexander and M2TW.

I am sure that the mods that are being produced for M2TW will make or have made that game look a lot better and probably play better as well.

Although the skins in M2TW look OK I've been told that there isn't really much detail in there.

    hmmmm, i reakon m2tw mods, not vanilla (vanilla m2tw was HORRIBLE), are awesome. Im a fan of both roman times and medieval times (although im more of a roman fan). I guess i think m2tw has more diversity in units. It allows for more tactics to be used because of the diversity of units. For example;

1.there are way more guys with axes, especially in northern europe while in rtw you barely ever see any.

    2. heavy cavalry is everywhere not just in parthia (i like seeing cavalry charge and destroy a whole row of units )

    3. there are infantry from swordsmen (one handed, two handed) to axe men, to pikemen and to spearmen (although in my opinion there is just too many units of spearmen, TOO many). while in rtw you have a phalanx based game...even the barbarians used phalanx formation!!
but of course i miss the romans now and again and when you see such improvements since rtw vanilla you have to go back.

still i like it because of those reason. m2tw also increases the importance of archers and reduces those annoying skirmishers and velites.

but of course rtw will always have the romans and the greeks (although too many of them if you ask me but hey who an i to argue against history) and most importantly the chariots and elephants....which make selecuids my favourite, 2nd fav is the romans.

Total War is about battles, the other stuff is just complementary. so without a diversity in battles i find i get bored very fast. m2tw of course has too many spearmen making it pointless to have such diversity because the AI always gets spearmen (which i can understand because of the dangerous heavy cavalry but still, please )

lastly it is the ai....in m2tw you can mod the BAI and CAI, unlike rtw. but hopefully this will change with a patch and then rtw will become my favourite again, hopefully

    my 2 cents
"we're way way pre-alpha and what that means is there is loads of features not just in terms of the graphics but also in terms of the combat and animations that actually aren't in the game yet.So the final game is actually gonna look way way better than this!” - James Russell, CA
Just like the elephant animation, this Carthage scenario is actually in the game, it just has a small percantage factor for showing up, that's all...

have you ever played a siege in MTW2? I hate the pathfinging. For instance i had the attacking AI standing still on the wall all battle for a few times.

Second in a siege its almost impossible to deploy how you want to deploy because of the endless invisible walls in that game.

Third i think that MTW2 is just way to slow paced. The battles feel so dull most of the time. The problems with cavalry are so annoying.

No i think i will stick with RS, for one because Romans rule, for second because RS rules. And third because RS2 will come out in a few months and i have more then enough fun with playing RS pwning gauls and greeks with my roman legions:sparta:

You guys are right! It's the pacing! The battles just take forever just to do anything, and the pathfinding is poor.. It's frustrating because the games are the same engine, but they took things that worked and now they don't work.

I'm in the same boat as you Coldcall.

I personally do not like the football player hunched over look that the units get when they are "fighting." Besides I've given up on anything that CA makes until they actually listen to the fans and create something better in the diplomacy and A.I. areas. I could care less about graphics. Everything is brown and unarmored, or silver and armored. A knight from England basically looks like a kinght from Italy. Plus, theres no gaesatae!

My feeling was....given all the hype about MTW2....that a graphically superior 'engine' should thus LOOK graphically superior. No? I don't think that is too much to expect, given what was hyped. But then I installed it, went into a campaign, and was instantly confronted with the poorest looking sack of crap I had ever seen just on the strat map!! Even on highest settings, with a good video card, the characters looked like a 4th grader designed them, and that's probably insulting to a 4th grader.

First impressions are really BIG, IMHO, and MTW2 really took a nose-dive there. It got no better from there on. So what is the point of a 'superior graphics engine'. Or, was it REALLY superior? I think the ONLY thing MTW2 has for it is the ability to edit the AI's performance somewhat, and the ability to have random units. But then, Tone said there are problems with that as well.

I bought it for $50. I could not find a user guide, so I stumbled across the twcenter. Came and saw the RS mod and some of the RTW discussions, and remembered borrowing RTW from a friend. Bought it's gold edition for $20 and hardly played MII after that until Kingdoms, which I payed $30 for to see it go to a $30 gold edition two months later. So I payed... $100 to play RS
Yes, I hate the fact RTW is out and I still have a Japanese title. Come on now admins- let's get with the program.

Well seeing as this thread as been reopened, I may as well add my opinion.

Yes, M2TW does lack a certain something compared to RTW, although the graphics are better on M2TW I'm not a huge fan of fancy 'realistic' graphics (I still play the original civilization game) and so Rome's more simplistic style appeals to me.
Gameplay wise, I enjoyed the first MTW, then RTW built on that by scrapping the Risk-style gameplay while still retaining the 'fun factor'. However I just can't keep up a game of M2TW (or mods for it) for more than an hour or so without getting, for want of a better word, bored.

Then, of course, RTW has RS

I got my RTW from garage-sale actually; I got it for about 15 bucks, and I have been hooked since I first played it. Then I bough the expansion packs and such...

But I didn't buy MeTW2. I played it over at a friend's house, and he gave it to me, saying I could install it on my PC.
    So I did.
    I played a campaign.
    Hated the graphics.
    Returned it to my friend.

Rome (and RS in particular) are superior in every way compared to MeTW2.
