Default noob question about spy and assasin

been playing this game for a while. never figured out the additional roles of spy and assassin besides the obvious.

1st what detects other spies in your city? putting your own spy or assasin there?
2nd, what deters enemy assassins, by putting your own spy or assassins with your general , or both.

    Hi Nakago,

You can try to see spies in your own cities by placing your own spies in there. They will also tend to improve Public Order a little for you.

By putting spies in enemy cities you can start to cause a state of unrest that can cause a settlement to rebel. Ideal if you want to take a provenice but not kick start a war with that Faction. However this is dependant on other factors like garrison size and the Public Order of the provenice etc.

Try to target newly acquired provenices as PO tends to be at a low, espcially if the garrison there is small as well.

It is possible to use a combination of spy/assassin to upset a provenice, place a good spy in the town and use an assassin to sabatarge builds such as churchs town halls etc. It can be counter balanced by the faction increasing the garrison or reducing tax levels, but you are causing problems for them.

I think you can put a spy with your general to help protect them, but also they can gain a triat (can't remember which one) that does help them detect and foil assassination attempts.

    Hope this helps.

Oh also beware that the use of assassins and spies can affect your reputation regardless of wether they are successful or not.

Spies and assassins won't affect your reputation, only the inter-faction relationships. I use assassins/spies frequently and never experience any drops in reputation from them, I'm always "very trustworthy" or "immaculate". The only times when it can cause is by using an assassin to kill a person of an ally of yours, if he fails a war will break out and that will cause your reputation to drop.

I have found that using my assassins extensively has caused my Faction Leader to gain Dread (10/10 dread atm).

Well, can you expect a man that uses these dirty tactics to dipatch his enemies 'chivalrous'.

Indeed, using assassins is a very easy way to get your leader into a high-dread battling machine.

Select your assassin and click on another faction's settlement. Go to the sabotage tab and select a building from the list. Bringing a spy helps a lot as he will tell you what buildings there are and will also give you a chance of success. Not bringing a spy causes all buildings to appear as question marks and you won't get a succes rate.

Your own spies are used as counter intelligence, assassins can't help in that department. Spies help against other spies and assassin attacks/sabotages.
I assume putting a spy in your army will do the same, but have never encountered the AI putting a spy in their armies (so it's hard to verify).

When you're England and order your spy to join a stack, he says something like "protecting your army from enemy eyes, my lord"....
... so it would make sense that a spy helps in that matter....

    ..

.. not that making sense has anything to do with this game, as always.
