I seriously would be happy with either of these guys as my President, so long as we don't have to deal with Hillary. Both of them have their merits, and I think either one of them COULD do a credible job in the White House.
Before people begin to question my sanity, let me explain that I like each of these two for different reasons. I feel that McCain would be a better wartime president and that he has strong principles which he, for the most part, sticks to very well. I can definitely respect a principled person, even if I do not believe in some of those principles. McCain is also decidedly more free trade, which is good because I see no benefits in utilizing protectionism to prop up already-failing industries when re-training those workers for new, different jobs is much more cost-effective.
On the other hand, I feel that Obama is great and inspiring speaker, something which has been decidedly lacking in our past few presidents. Speechmaking is one of the key features of the presidency, and someone who can do that well has a good chance of being a successful President. Obama is a relative newcomer in Washington, and such a breath of fresh air can be useful every once in a while over there. Obama is also more likely to prevent Roe v. Wade (a constitutionally muddy decision, but the only one we've got right now) from being overturned via his appointees, and prevent there from being any chance of a federal ban on gay marriage.
All of this said, there is still plenty of room for either of them to completely screw up as President (Obama going too far with his anti-corporate messages, McCain failing to withdraw from Iraq at the right moment or permitting another strong political lurch to the right). However, this is a risk with any person placed in our highest office, and I am still quite interested to see who comes out on top. Either one of these two will make me happy, even if it is in different ways.
