The first mention of a cohort was during one of the Punic wars wasn't it?
I'm speaking in regard to the first named legion after Marinus. So it was the first or second Punic war?.
first Named legion.... not sure. they slowly got their names as they went along - the men referred to themselves as the "6th Ferrata" or the " 3rd Gallica" and eventually the names stuck. either legions belonging to Caesar or Pompey.

3rd Gallica all the way........... ALright. Let me ask you guys something. What else do you want me to add to this thread about Auxilia support? I have other ideas but I want your guys feedback on it.
Thanks.

Just make your point. Love the ideas.. It's a most useful thread, mate.
I'll put up how many legions you should take on a campaign. Sometimes you can take to much and it becomes an overkill. I've experienced that and I felt bad for the AI.![]()
Ideas are welcomed. No idea is a bad idea.
Well I put up the number of legions part.

Hey Century X Can you please further explain your fort system? If all your forces were staying at the fort, then is there anyone stay at the cities? Even in peace time, without garrison forces, the citizens can still go riot I believe?
:hmmm:
Century X, about the Roman name for Britain, just saw a documentary where they called it Terra Incognita, which sounds kinda strange but might aswell be true. Correct me if Im wrong or this has already been posted. And very nice guide btw.![]()
¨Philip of Macedon: “If I enter Laconia, I will level Sparta to the ground.”
¨Spartan reply: “If.”
plus, if you play by hosue rules, you should only have one of each legion around after the reforms, meaning that your resources will be a wee bit stretched!![]()

Ya, I sick to the house rules like glue, but I have to be honest and say I'm inclined to send as many legions, of the named legion out if you no what I meen. The reason I do that is because if my history is right there where over 50000 in a legion so that why i maybe have 3 or 4 army's of the same legion.
The way that RTW works, doesn't that eliminate the fun playing as Romans?
I have to admit that even as them and their famed Legios I've never expanded further than the Western Roman Empire's borders. (Never conquered Britannia, for instance.) Maybe the problem is the limited number of named Legios? Although I've noticed that if you use the Auixillia system, things get a lot easier. Just starting a new campaign as Romans, I hope I can cope with the pressure, as historically they had to.![]()
Thats what makes it a challenge. To expand with your named legions and hold those borders. But if you have help like with your Auxilia legions which the romans used in real life then it becomes a little easier to expand beyond the romans historical borders.

very easy.
That was the main reason why I had developed the Auxilia Legion System. I was having a hell of a time holding and expanding my empire or republic. I like to call it a republic. With just the named legions. I mean yes I had Auxilia back ups for the legions but not to the extent I have now which enables me to have long campaigns and the ability to hold on to conquered regions and have a war front. Like I said before it also creates a realistic conquest. You read about the romans conquering these people all over the place but the fact of the matter is they had a tough time every step of the way. They had rebellions, entire legions turning on Rome(Well that doesn't happen in this mod but you see what i'm talking about). And the politics didn't helpe either.
I had Macedonia V and 4 not 3 Auxilia legions conquer the sarmatian lands and then swing through the black sea and take pontus and armenia. And they did this all by themselves. By the end of the campaign the 5 generals who were in charge all had high commands. And then when the campaign ended the people started to rebel a little so I sent home Macedonia V and it Auxilia legions for retraining and immediately sent them back to take control of the people. In which they did. So this is a good example on how this system can be effective.

I wait to build the Auxilia legions. Most of the time there isn't time to build the whole army to full strength so I'll send the legion and maybe one of its Auxilia legions ahead while I continue to build the remaining part of the Auxilia legions. But I prefer to build them all and then send them out to war.
