    What else you guys think I should add to this? I can add alot more but I'm stuck in my campaign. Macedon is putting up one of the best fights they have ever done against me. I want to post pics of how I organize the forts and all with the legions but that is going to have to wait.

    they are supposed to replace velites. basically, skirmishers. you can use them ahead of the legionnaires to pepper the enemy, or you can use them as an addition to the legionnaire's pila waves. their javelins, added to the damage of the legionnaire's pila, create a heavier blow on the enemy's morale and end up killing more, so the legionnaires (1) have less enemies to fight when the melee starts and (2) rout the enemy faster. their kills dont skyrocket until you use them like century said and move them behind the enemy line to throw javelins at their exposed backs. however you have to be a little lucky to have an opening like that, as enemy stacks usually have cavalry to mow down any wandering skirmishers, or other units.

    use onagers! they wreak havoc on slow moving phalanxes. before the melee ever starts, they'll be at a 30% disadvantage.

    Well I put up on the first page a battle on how to win against barbarians.
    I put it in a spoiler so that it looks more organized.

    Tell me what you guys think.

    I've never thought about auxiliaries supporting the main legion. Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a try.

    Well I usually use them for flanking manuvers since there light. They usually kill a good bulk of the enemy army.

    Perhaps Century you could post a table of how you keep the information. Perhaps it could be printed as i trust paper more than my computer sometimes. Then we could see, but if that too much effort it couldn't be too much effort to knock one up.

    { i was thinking of doing something similar for an AAR. Although not a roman one but someone different who also had a very disciplined army (Being inspired here by the Erikson's Mazalan series - if anyone had any suggestions)}

    I don't have excel so I can't look at that century, but I think I know what you mean. I do the same thing for my legions, but on paper. I have a paper that lists the legion name, and the city and region where they are recruited.

    Then I have a piece of paper for each legion that says who is leading it, where they end their turn, and kill counts. It's a bit of work but it's totally worth it! Sometimes I imagine the general talking at the start of battles, telling his legion of the great victory in northern Transalpine Gaul where they defeated and killed X number of Gauls.

    You can really write a legion history this way. As for auxilia...well I only just realised there were different sorts. I couldn't figure out why they wouldn't retrain until I looked at the name.

    My auxilia armies look at lot like your first few, but I don't really use them for fighting that much. I put them in forts and defensive positions and take from them as I need to. Poor Valeria Victrix once was down to two legionaries and the rest auxilia.

    deffo. Velites (and Light Auxilia by extension) often don't get enough praise, but they're REALLY useful!

    I don't like Firing Onangers at any enemy. They always seem to massively undershoot the enemy and hit my own men. I don't trust the crew/onangers to pull back behind my legion in time and protect themselves. Perhaps i need to muse on this tomorrow.
