Some people are of the opinion that Julius Caesar was an emperor, while I am convinced that the first true "emperor" was Augustus. If you think that Caesar qualifies as an emperor then we could debate on that because I don't believe that. Admittedly this is something a semantics question but there are certain elements that make a difference between an emperor and the first man in Rome (which Caesar was) : divine element, not elected by people, does not have to explain his actions etc
