He wasn't really vegeterian, he stopped eating meat for some years because it made some unpleasent (and very smelly) gases to come out of his behinds. But he loved meat as far as I know.

As far as I know, as a young adult, AH was a bum in Vienna, painting landscapes and walls for a "living" - he was hardly in a position to have a healthy meal on a daily basis so.....
It's very much like a 25yrs old male virgin in todays Vienna exclaiming that he willingly practices celibacy under the influence of Jozef Ratzinger....
