What does Tibet give to China that makes it so important? The tourist attraction of the Himalaya mountain or what?

They maintain the one China policy and in their minds Tibet is part of China. You must remember that while Tibet was once an indepedent Kingdom, it was part of various Chinese dynasties for most of modern history. As Qing dynasty collapsed it gained a brief time of independence, but the Chinese never stopped considering it a part of China.

Tibet was a Theocratic Feudalistic state that practiced slavery. (probably better off under china).
But, that doesn't mean Tibet doesn't deserve Independence. I'd support the Tibetan independence if their aims were Democracy with Universal Suffrage.
Tibet is 'important' to china due to its vast natural resources, iron/coal and other things are drawn from tibet for China's industrial use.
At least thats what I remember from a 'tibet' video that we watched in sociology.

Ah... I know that quote. "then they oppressed me, and I tried to fight, but there was no one left."
... and what is your avatar? ... do I... want to know?
Anyway, many others have stating why quite nicely, but @Burnum, was it real slavery or serfdom? Not much difference, but there is some...

They were vastly inferior to China in all practical regards and the public always roots for the underdog.
However, it was also a very technologically backwards and oppressive state with an elite priest caste that owned just about everyone else as slaves.
So basically China wanna keep Tibet merely to show their national strength and they have no-nonsense policy when it comes to secessionist movement regardless the worth of the land?

In contrast to the efforts of tiny Israel to make contributions to the world so as to better mankind, one has to ask what have those who have strived to eliminate Israel from the face of the earth done other than to create hate and bloodshed.
It wasn't? What part of Tibetan culture is torture and mutilation as legitimate punishment for stealing?I think it's incredibly ignorant and small minded to suggest it's a good thing that Tibet's culture and deep religious tradition (unique in the world) is all but wiped out because it was a "theocracy with slaves"
So Tibet wasn't a theocracy with slaves?that's a very communist and/or politicized reading of things another would be that the people had a deep central meaning in their lives which is being destroyed along with the monasteries in order to create an illusory socialist paradise. people are more than political animals...
So what's culture too the serfs? Too the slaves? Too the oppressed? You can't justify serfdom and slavery.if you care to spend time in research you will come to know it as a horrific tragedy--they were forced to exchanged their uniqueness for 'being like everyone else', a leveling process that destroys countless world cultures...
Guess who built the first Hospital in Tibet? Not to mention Chinese imperialism!
Guess Who built the first roads in Tibet?
Let me Announce the newly independent National socialist nation of Tasmania. See?Independence comes first. What does it matter which set of government a country has?
Basically, they don't like to loose face. If they let Tibet go then East Turkestan will want to go too, and whole slabs of China will just seceed. Anyway, the Chinese took over in the 1950's apartheid and segregation was still running strong in most of the world and people are complaining about people living in practical slavery, it's essentially the same thing, many were doing it, the Tibetans would probably have abolished their system at some point anyway. At least the Tibetans didn't oppress religion, harvest organs and break up protests with tanks.
The Chinese government maintains that it has claims to control all regions that were controlled by the Qing Dynasty, despite their absolute doctrinal hatred for the Manchu regime. Controlling Tibet legitimizes this view, and helps to keep other regions with non-Han Chinese populations from considering breaking away, themselves, because they can see how repressed Tibet has become.
Also, who's to say that Tibet would not be democratic? The Dalai Lama hates the adoration he recieves, and has rsaid on a number of occasions that Western Democracy and science are compatible with Tibetan Buddhism.

Free Tibet you Tyrants!
Tasmania ?
Sigh...
Tibet- mmmm
I don't get why so many people get tight over a backward nation wanting to be set free to suppress its people.
As if there isn't enough suppression in the world.
China, like them or not, have freed thousands of Tibetans from historic slavery.
The Llama? What's the deal there- the guy pretends he is the incarnation of Ghaud (with glasses!). Naw, just like a Saudi prince or any other oligarcy. The ruling elite want to remain in power and in this instance got knocked out.![]()
