I have applied for a scholorship to go to Egypt and study Arabic. Its by no means certain that I'll get it, but in case I do, any advice?

go see the pyramids i heard theyre good
Well, I know this isn't saying much, but enjoy your time while there in Aegyptus! There is a lot to see there, the Great Pyramids are just an example, as well as Cairo, Alexandria, Thebes, and other locations.
I heard there's a lot of armed forces hanging around places there, especially at tourism spots. Try smoking hookah. The lady in the most decorated hijab is the most experienced lover (warning: no personal experience).
U WANNA TALK TO ME!

lolz.
theres an old king's palace now a hotel pretty damn close to the pyramids in cairo i stayed in - its cheap and uber nice too (like the ceiling of the lobby is made of solid gold! was a little overwhelming really)
pyramids are good, they got a big museum too but its all kind of random - u may want a guide for it.
Alexandria is ok, though there isnt really too much to see.
Luxor has temples near it and a nice local museum which is relatively small but pretty much brand spanking new and has quite a lot of cool stuff in there.
And dont make eye contact with any of the hagglers.
You're thinking of the Marriot. I've stayed there twice, and it's a great hotel. I lived in Alexandria for a year, by the way.
And "amen" to what you said about the hagglers. They're especially bad when tourism is slow. "You buy antique? One hundred pounds! Very authentic papyrus scroll! Real papyrus! Not banana leaf! Ninety pounds! I like your face, so eighty pounds!"
As for terrorism, just stop watching American news.
Lol, you have to see the palestinians. Maybe you get a rock thrown at your face!

lol, I'd probably wind up throwing rocks with them. But seriously, seeing the pyramids and other cultural sights is something I'll definatly do. Terrorism I'm not really all that worried about. I was thinking more along the lines of basic survival tips like: Can I drink the water? Where should I shop for food and clothing? etc... I'll be living with a host family in Cairo so any info about that specific area is appreciated.

rofl yea.. i know exactly what u mean.
it is noooooooooowhere near as bad as you are making it out to be. Pick pockets and annoying hagglers maybe, but terrorism; whilst above the average when compared with most western countries, is nothing to bother thinking about at all.
either ignorant or merely fearmongering
Stay away from the tourist resorts on the Red sea, unless you enjoy suicide bombings. Also, it's generally in-advisable to go to tourist locations when they're really busy, because of both pick pockets and terrorism, dunno if there's less of that these days, but there have been some pretty horrific attacks in the past. But I'd definitely say your lucky, I'd love to go to the middle east to study Arabic.
Nooo! Don't go! There's sand and mummies there!
nah it was this one
and yea, me and my bro almost got in a fist fight to get rid of some annoying mob of hagglers trying to drag me into their godamn 'shop' outside the front of the hotel we were staying in at Luxor. (literally step outside the hotel and u have them there...)
Actually it is so bad, that they have a special police unit to keep the hagglers away. (TP - Tourist Police)
I totally know what you mean by just outside the hotel.
I must say that I saw no evidence of anti Western attitude. None at all, They even tried to buy my girlfriend. (I was sort of disappointed at how much they would give - she is worth the double)

yea theres no real hatred out there, only incident i was involved in was when some random old lady had a go in arabic at my mum for wearing 3/4 lengths (she had worn those fully covered shiz to enter the mosque at saladin's citadel and had almost passed out from the heat).
stupid old ****
i was also dissapointed in the lack of camels they were offering for my mum at the pyramids.
better hope hteyre well off, the vast majority of the city is a shantytown.
That is true, but I don't think anybody living in a shanty would offer to take care of a foreign student if they couldn't take care of themselves, when my parents visited Cairo they took pictures of homeless people in graveyards....*sigh*better hope hteyre well off, the vast majority of the city is a shantytown
