England. Armour piercing longbowmen from simple castles, then yeomen archers and finally the awesome retinue longbowmen, so a good archer unit for the early, high and late era.
And lol'd at ur avatar although it might get removed - at first I thought it was some weird British Gas advert thing!
England would be the first faction to spring to mind when thinking of archers.
But the Turks aren't too bad either. They get Ottoman Infantry, Janissary archers (excellent archers that can use stakes) AND cavalry archers. I'm not sure of the quality of the cavalry archers in an unmodded game, but in Stainless Steel they get good ones (Iqta dar and Sipahis).

Great avatar!!
Russia gets some nice archers with very good armor. and itīs not like anyone is gonna mind his avatar.
The France's "Scots Guard" kicks ass, so for endgame archers I'd vote for France.
It is true though that the English longbowmen are available through all eras and make England the "best collection of archers" award winner.
Hmm, there isn't really a faction with 'best archers' because most of the late era ones are equal on stats;
However - England get's their elite guys in the early/high period ASWELL as Sherwood Archers who have 2 hitpoints
Next question....
How should i place my archers on the walls to get the best damage done, ive heard the best is to place them next to towers with many ranks - true?
I reckon it is due to the fact that towers shower the enemy with unlimited arrows, with quite an accuracy. Putting your archers by the tower would cripple their own shooting ability (which is nowhere near what they should be doing from the walls anyway) but will make it a lot harder for the assaulter - the tower just over their head will rip them apart with much lesser chance of shooting your own men.
There was a discussion on Sherwood Archers a while back, it didn't turn out too good for them. The conscence was they suck because there aren't enough of them in a unit, they have the same ammo and rango as other elite archers and they don't have any armour (meaning they will lose in a shoot out against well armoured archers, despite having two hitpoints)
The first time i used the sherwood archers i was not impressed. but i decided to give them a second chance. this is how it played out :
Fighting a full stack of mongols which had 5 or 6 units of hardcore archers, I had 5 units of retinue and 1 sherwood unit. so the stats were pretty even. so what i did next was put the sherwood's in loose formation and marched them infront of all my retinue units, they were hitting the mongol archers like little champs and caused them to aggro to my retinue units, which in turn ended in their lives.
I thought they must have a range bonus over the retinue, but im not sure if the terrain was the governing factor here. long story short the sherwood archers are great to lure other arhers to your archers, and the beuty of that is the enemy will run in to get in range of mr and mrs sherwood, but then get pelted with fire arrows from the retinue's. so they don't actually get a chance to fire back, becuase they run away each time.
This must be effective only becuase the sherwood has 2 hp, there are only 30 of them and they are spread thin. and their range seems very good.
I have made it so Sherwood Archers have 60 in a stack.
I reckon the Byzantine EMpire is pretty good with their Horse archers as well as Trezibond archers and Guard Archers, they really kick a**.

I would say in the late period it would be France with the Scots guard and the Aventuriers, but by periods it would be England with all the longowmen available defenitely.
I usually place my archers above the gate for just to the city due to them have good view and range.

Polish Mountend crossbowmen are kick ass, I play as England and a while back some dude mentioned Strezctley - spelling is wrong I know but it means shooter in polish.
I did a custom battle - one unit of rentinue archer v one unit of Shooters - they owned me. Put them in loose formation and blaze away, you just don't kill enough. So if I had to say best archer unit it would be them.
I am not going to even go into Scots Guard - oh yeah the Scots were well known for their use of Longbowmen or Mounted French longbowmen - why do the french get them -it sucks, England should at least have them. It seems to me that as soon as the French get to the late age they get best everything!!
Just as well I wiped them out before then.
IMO no one should get them, it was hard enough to draw and aim a longbow without having the lack of space on the back of a horse and having to aim whilst moving, its laughable.
1.) Best archer unit - Venetian Heavy Archers
Best crossbow unit - Genoese Crossbow Militia
2.) Best archer faction - England closely followed by Russia
3.) I tend to spread them out along as much wall as possible to minimize them a target to other archers.
