    Default Sparta As A Faction

Please list any known mods where Sparta is an independent faction like it is in this mod. No alliances or Greek City States just Sparta itself. Thanks!!!

I really like the ROP mod because it's about a time in history that no other mod ever did, and I am learning a lot just reading all the units and building descriptions, because I have almost no knowledge of this part of history (i.e. pre-Classical Rome and Greece). And it's really refreshing to see so many different cities.
And of course, it's the first time I got to play Sparta as a faction and it was great. Though I would suggest, in the next version of ROP, to improve the skinning of the Spartiatai hoplites. Currently they don't seem that different from the regular Hippeis hoplites.

Another thing, looking at the unit card (not the picture in the unit description, but the small version of the unit card when you look at an army) the helmet part is very stretched.

And maybe increase the unit stats of the Spartan hoplites a bit, only because I really like Sparta as a faction.

Very good suggestions actually but I haven't yet played the mod so I am going to have to withhold judgment... overall is it a mod worth playing???

I only commented on less than a thousandth of one percent of the mod, the graphics of the Dorikoi Hoplitai and the Hippeis Hoplitai and one part of the Spartan armor. Yes the mod is very worth playing and very original, it makes RTW into a totally different game, kind of like EB, but of very different style than EB, with new buildings totally new units and new factions. It's not a mod as much a new RTW, since it's about some hundreds of years before Rome and every faction was made anew. It might as well be called Persia: Total War or Ancient Near East: Total War. Please try it. As far as I know, it's only game/mod of a game that has Babylon in it. This era has never been made in a game ever, the era following Akka/Sumeria but before Greece and Rome. So ROP is totally original, and not only the map is totally different (which is very refreshing) but the world is also totally different.

I think the present release of Rop os very playable. The main aspects of the mod are in place and you can get a feeling of what the full mod may feel. There is obviously work to be done but that doesn't prevent you from playing customs battles or campaign.
The models are nice, the timeframe is nice, the factions are nice. What else could you ask for?

So it's definitely worth downloading at least.

You know we started out as Persia: Total War

@The Pianist - A lot of your suggestions are hampered by the time frame we are dealing with. The Spartans in particular were always rather set in their ways but in general the reason we toned down the use of the linthorax armour is because at this point in history it was nowhere near as popular as it would later become. The Spartan model screenshot isn't from RoP as we don't use the Lambda symbol on our Spartan's shields.

I'm sure you can understand that graphics artists willing to work on RTW rather than M2TW are getting harder to find so our main concern is to hammer out the factions we haven't touched yet before we can think about going back revamping old ones. I do understand where you're coming from though. the team has wanted to re-work the Greek units for quite a long time now.

Thanks for the suggestions and especially all the kind words!

Well thats good to hear because I know the Spartans didn't have the Lambda on their shields until the Peloponnesian War and that would of irked me lol. I can't believe Steven Pressfield messed that up in his book Gates Of Fire... which is still an amazing book and I sometimes read random parts of it just because of that

What kind of knowledge does it take to do RTW graphics? What kind of software do people need to be able to use. Because I'd like to learn to make graphics, rather than just comment on them, when I know very little to comment about.

Most people use a combination of Adobe Photoshop (textures) and Autodesk 3dsmax (models). I think the learning curve for 3dsmax is kinda longer than for photoshop, so it's easier to learn to edit textures than to make the models fit your needs.

My comment about mercenaries in ROP wasn't accurate (and there already is a solution). Or maybe the mod is more focused on Persia/Parthians (which I played very little) and the Medes, and less detailed on the Greek factions. The mercenaries on the Persian faction aren't colored in the unit card, distinguishing these as mercenaries. So implementing that for all factions in ROP would be great.

Yeah judging by the title I would think it leans more toward Persia lol but I don't think they neglected the Greek cities either though.
