Well, you all know about cheats. Once I found out about the auto win cheat and the money cheat, I can't help but use it when I'm in help.

Is there any way to actually disable them from use while inside the game, even modifying the files? As long as the console commands are disabled, I know I won't go through the trouble to re enable them.

Really, It has been ruining my last few campaigns.

i used to do those all the time. Best thing i would say is rip out all of the stuff that is in the key and burn it. But the key is useful if you do spanish. Just kind of make yourself not use it, it takes time but i got out of the habit.

Well, ask yourself - why are you cheating? If it's because you need cash, then instead of cheating, take the right steps to generate income.

If it's because you're afraid you won't win the battle, then retreat and try a different tactic/approach.

Yeah, you'll lose a few battles, probably a few territories...you'll probably lose a lot of money too (since you're so used to cheats).

But, you'll find a way to get the upper hand. You'll be the comeback kid and you'll pride yourself in your ability to get things accomplished. And the game will be more rewarding.

Its not that I'm bad at the game, its just that the temptation always gets to me. It's sad really.

In other news, I've made it 30 turns as Russia with no cheats

    I'm a "Toggle_FOW" addict...

Although that's not really a cheat, seeing as the AI doesn't have FOW either... hmm...

Really, I used to cheat all the time, then I limited my self to Auto_win cheats only on naval battles and fighting rebels... now I limit my self to only Toggle_fow cheat, which isn't that bad =p

the game is far more interesting without cheats. i only use toggle_fow sometimes to locate a rebel settlement. i used add_money in one campaign, and it wasn't exiting anymore....

Oh no, it can be really cool. Use the add_money cheat to create a strong army with the best units, then crush your enemy. It can be fun, if you're a bit evil.

OK hope you're ready for a bit of a read now... It's most likely worth it.

I stopped using cheats when I was about 14 because I realized that being omnipotent wasn't any fun anymore. You just have to be strong and make yourself not use the cheats!

Only times I use cheats nowadays is if I have completed a game and I want to do something differently. For example in Call of Juarez, once I had finished the game I played it again but unlocked the bow using cheats (or was it a mod?). The bow in that game is awesome and you get to use it in very small amounts if you play the game legibly.

In both Medieval 2 and Silent Hunter 4 (sub sim) I used to save just about all the time so that I could go back if I did something wrong, this I think is WORSE than cheating. Nowadays I just play on and take the consequences, it was far more challenging to loose nearly all of my empire as the Moors until I only had the two settlements furthest to the south west left (no one bothered to come down that far) and then have to work my way back to an empire again. Or to loose half my crew and having my stern torpedo room flooded in SH4 and trying to come back to pearl harbour safely, which I actually managed, was far more fun than constantly being a fully loaded sub perfectly angled up against an approaching convoy.

Anyway the point is that you just need to be in control of yourself and stop cheating. It IS much more fun not to be overpowered, Medieval 2 isn't about having a big empire, its about building it. Its not the end that counts, its about enjoying the ride!

Now what I think you should do for "therapy" is to start as for example HRE who have a rather big starting "empire". Then what you do is you just loose the whole thing. Loose the empire, let it collapse and finally have your last province wiped out, idk attack the papacy first thing in the game and you'll have everyone crusading on you. This will show you that its not really a problem to loose the empire and then you can start a new game, without cheats, and you'll be able to take some losses and your victories will be much sweeter. There is no victory as sweet as the one where you after years of oppression retake your former capital. Good luck to you mate!

Yes, cheating takes the fun out of the campaign completley - if you're going to cheat with money you might aswell conquer the campaign in one turn.

It's much more fun without cheats - I stopped using them in Rome, only ever tried toggle_fow in M2:TW - which is not really a cheat.

Cheats go well in games on the consoles for example Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, not sure why but these games are designed for cheats

If you ENJOY the money cheat, then go for it. You bought this game for enjoyment, right? Then go ahead and enjoy....

If you are cheating because that is the only way to win, and you feel bad about it; then go to Easy/Easy settings and try that. Then move up as your skill allows. IF you can't win on E/E then get help. For every immature knothead who might want to put you down in order to stroke their own ego, there are plenty of folks here who would be willing to help you gain skill at the game.

If it is just an obsessive-compulsive thing, then try this: Save your game as you progress. Say you are playing as Milan on Hard/Hard settings and you are at about year 1102. Save your games as Milan_HH_1102_NC, Milan_HH_1104_NC, Milan_HH_1106_NC, etc. Where "HH" means "Hard/Hard," and "NC" stands for "No Cheat."

Then, if you get that urge to cheat, GO AHEAD! Just remember to save the game immediately ~before~ the cheat as "...NC" and just ~after~ the cheat without the "NC." Later, if you want to see how you would do with no cheat, just go back to the latest "NC" game and pick up the campaign. Save every turn, so that if the urge hits again...
