I'm portugal. I have 2 alliances with Spain and Poland. However Spain has gown to war with France. Will they ask me to join the war with them, or do I just declar war on France?
Also, if I go to war with another faction. Will mu allies help me?

Question 1: If your forces are close enough to where their forces are attacking France (or being attacked by France) they can ask you to help but you can refuse.
Question 2: In the reverse situation of question 1's answer, they might or they might not; depends on your relationship. Don't expect them to just go out and declare war on their own though.
When doing diplomacy with them, if you ask them for something, they might give you that something with the condition that you attack their enemy.
Like Miccofl said, they could go to war with you, but don't assume that they will.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but in my recent game, I'm England and allied with Spain, neutral with Portugal. Some of my fleet was chilling in the waters near Spain/Portugal, and since they're at war, during Spain's turn, their fleet attacked the Portuguese fleet(or maybe it was the other way around). Anyway, it popped up a message for me about a naval battle, which we won. But then I was at war with Portugal. So watch your fleets.![]()
It is not a bug. You were helping Spain fight Portugal. It is one of the ways to get your allies to fight your enemies. You could have retreated and not gotten involved. You pressed the auto-resolve button, right?

It's best to use diplomacy to offer an attack on your allies' enemies. It increases your global reputation and the standing with your allies. You can also ask for some usefull stuff in return. When there are lots of navies around it's probably best to do it this way as you will end up at war eventually.
You can also use the navy trick to your advantage as an AI ally won't retreat from a naval fight. If two navies are side by side, one being your ally and the other your enemy, attack the enemy ship and the ally joins in the fight (and declares war). It's infinately more usefull if your ally navy belongs to the papal states (instant excommunication for your enemy).
Genrally when I play a game even if their my allies at the start I end up at war with them cos there freekin morons. and I end up having 1 alliance with some dud country who has no friends and is at war with everyone anyway!
