Default The 1st Annual Legion Awards

We all get a little close to some our legions. Don't deny it, you know you save your favorite for the most glorious campaigns. This topic asks to you give awards to your legions! I'd love to hear reasons too! You can have runner ups as well.

If you can think up any other good awards, post those, and I'll edit them into here!

    Awards:
Go-to Legion: This doesn't necesarily mean it's your favorite. But it gets the job done, whether in Gaul or in Parthia.

Best Dressed '08: Which legion is the most stylin' to you? Ever been on campaign and stopped to admire those shields? Confess which legion!

Worst Dressed '08: On the other side, ever seen a legion that was a crime against fashion? I know I have--which is the ugliest to you?

The Little Legion That Couldn't: No matter what you do, no matter how well you fight, no matter how big the army, this legion just can't get the job done. This is the legion you throw at the 200-man rebel stacks (and are worried it won't win!). This is the legion that no one wants to be in.

Favorite Legion: These guys can be the loveable losers, or they can be a lean, mean, fat-reducing, grilling killing machine. Which legion do you love to love? Why?

The Little Legion That Could: Tough little guys, they get the job done...

Legion with the Best Name: Some just roll of the tongue...
    Let the ceremony commence!

The Little Legion That Couldn't: X Gemina, the unlucky legion that's always surrounded.

    Favorite Legion
: I Germanica, because it kicks the german barbarian butt.

Go-to Legion: Legio I Minerva. Somehow, they just get the job done. I lost the entire legion once but since then, they've become the legion my faction leader or top general uses. At least in my last campaign.

Best Dressed '08: Legio XXI Rapax. Wow, I love the way those shields look. Coming in a close second is Legion XII Fulminata for the reasons already stated.

    Worst Dressed '08
: Legio I Germanica. I just don't like the bright red shields. But, if the RS2 shield Cherry posted in another thread is any indication, that's about to change with new release. A close second is VI Victrix. Too feminine.

The Little Legion That Couldn't: Legio IX Hispaniensis. It's not that they lost a great battle or anything; it's just that I can't get inspired when I fight with them. There's just nothing there . . . nothing.

    Favorite Legion
: Legio II Augusta! I have a history with this legion. We fought in Gaul and we defeated the enemy. No other legion sees as much service as Lego II Augusta.

The Little Legion That Could (sorry, Fuzz, couldn't help adding a catagory for the legion that faced the most overwhelming odds and lived to brag about it): Legio XII Fulminata. They gave me my greatest victory every in a RTW game. Of course, they were destoryed in the next turn, so I guess they got to brag about it for . . . what, like a day . . .

EDIT: One other note about Legio XII Fulminata: they gave me my greatest victory back in the days BEFORE they had a missle attack . . . (1.2 or 1.3, I can't remember which) . . . .

Best Dressed '08: Legio III Cyrenaica. I don't why, they just look good.

Worst Dressed '08: Legio I Germanica...the red is too red.

The Little Legion That Couldn't: None

Favorite Legion: Legio I Minerva...I like the banner, and they like it too.

The Little Legion That Could Legio III Cyrenaica...I have fought the Parthians with them for years, and they just do NOT know how to lose. The Parthians RUN when they see it coming.

The Legion with the best Name Legio VI Victrix Pia Fidelis Constans Hispaniensis Britannica.....I just LOVE reading it.

I'm no Roman player but my favorite legion is the 22nd. They're uniforms are badass and in my one Roman campaign it conquered most of Asia minor and kicked some serious Seleucid butt.

Go-to Legion:I Germanica. These guys may be ugly but they're tough and in my campaign, held off a lot of stacks while reinforcements came.

Worst Dressed '08: V Macedonia. The colors just clash.

Best Dressed '08: XV Primigenia. The white and black combination works well. It helps that I've fond of these guys...

The Little Legion That Couldn't: II Augusta. I ended up disbanding them. They can stay that way. I just had some really bad battles and soon enough, it became a habit for them to lose. Maybe I'll bring them back later.

Favorite Legion: IX Hispaniensis. They look good and are at a good location to be useful. In my current campaign, two straight faction leaders have commanded them. They're preparing for a picnic in Gaul now...

Since you asked seriously, allow me to answer you . . . seriously. In doing so, I want to say I’m not trying to offend you or anyone else.

As Fuzz pointed out, game setting has a lot to do with it. Playing the battle or campaign map on hard or very hard versus easy or medium (and, yeah, like most people I have a medium/medium campaign saved just so I can see what it feels like to sweep the field) obviously effects the difficulty of the game. Although, to be honest, I don’t see a lot of difference between the medium and hard battle map settings and the very hard battle map settings causes some very strange anomalies — unarmored peltasts defeating armored legionaires, for example. But, yeah, that has an effect.

But there are other things that can effect your ability to win as well, including:

Unit Selection. If, in selecting the units for your legion, you include 4 units of triarii and a couple of mercenary spearmen or add four or five units of auxilia spearmen to a imperial legion consisting of 1 first cohort and 9 regular cohorts, then you’ve just made your army a bit stronger than what I usually use: 4 velites, 5 hastati, 5 principes and two triarii, or just the 10 legion unites with archers, light auxilia, and cavalry in support. Also, I use two generals and they usually don’t fight (and in RS 1.5 they’re frankly not strong enough to make a huge difference). If you use only one general, then you just picked up another fighting unit, right? That makes your legion stronger.

Does this make me a better person? No, it just means my gameplay style is different than someone else’s and, as a result, my legions tend to be weaker.

RS. 1.3 v. 1.5. Maybe I haven’t played 1.5 long enough, but I haven’t seen the hordes of armies in 1.5 that I saw 1.2 and 1.3. At one point in a campaign, I was facing 36 full stacks of Gauls. In another, I toggled FOW and saw that Egypt had gather 78 full stacks of armies on its borders. In the face of such numbers, and with a limit of 35 legions, it’s frankly quite easy to lose a battle.

I lost a lot more battles in the earlier versions than I do in 1.5.

Experience. I’m not speaking to unit experience but player experience. You play a game long enough, you start to figure out the AI. I started playing RS last year. When I first started, I immersed myself in the game, playing four or five hours a day. Then my wife said: "Choose: your game or your marriage." Well, now I play an hour a day or when ever I get a free minute. But even in the limited time I’ve played, I’ve arrived at the point where I can pretty much predict what the AI is going to do in a battle, which means I win more battles now than when I first started. Some people that are just starting out with RS may still be trying to figure it out.

Or, bottom line, maybe you’re just better at this than the rest of us - which is cool, too.

i play on Medium battle difficulty and Hard campaign difficulty.

for the campaign difficulty, i've always heard that VH is somehow easier because the player also receives the financial bonus that the AI gets, or something similar. i've never bothered to check it out myself, and took their word for it, and since then i've always selected H campaign difficulty.

as for battle difficulty, well, i definitely support a smart AI. but when the difficulty also introduces a CPU combat bonus which loves to throw off the unit balance that the mod creators have tweaked out, i am against it. it also reduces the stat page of each and every unit to nothing but a lie. back when i was playing H/H on XGM, i was wondering why my unit of phalanx were getting creamed by a near exact copy where the terrain, elevation, unit density were all equal. this is of course only one example.

i also use the '10 legion (1 first, 9 reg) with auxilia and a few cavalry' method.

(and boy are we off topic)

I find that the orange and black go together quite nicely, perhaps not as well as some others, but still...

Favorite Legion: V Macedonia - I have taken these guys to Gaul, Africa, Egypt, everywhere, they rule!

Go-to Legion: I Minervia, I've used them from Northern Gaul to Samartia to Parthia; their "home bases" in Northern Gaul and Jerusalem makes them very convenient to use in both the East and the West, and to keep them resupplied to be ready for more killing!

A close second would be V Macedonia, they've done a LOT of fighting in Gaul and Sarmatia, but their only base (that I remember of) in Thessalonica makes their resupply a bit inconvenient.

Best Dressed '08: XII Fvlminata, their shields look great and their armor is slightly different from the other legions; more decorations upon their skirts and the armored right arms.

Worst Dressed '08: I Germanica, they did a lot of fighting for me on the Rhine, but their shields are pretty ugly if you ask me.

The Little Legion That Couldn't: I'm ashamed to say, XIII Gemina. Caesar's famous legion historically didn't do too well in my Roman campaign; they were destroyed TWICE by the filthy barbarians! The first time had them fight three to four Gallic armies in a weakened condition, and the second time was a desperate siege while resting within Campus Iazyges.

Favorite Legion: XIV Gemina Martia Victrix; I love their black shields. XII Fvlminata would be a close second as well.

The Little Legion That Could: XV Primigenia, this was my SOLE African legion due to Carthage's ability to resupply quickly, and because of this, they faced endless Carthaginian armies, defended my African provinces well, and destroyed the remaining Carthaginian resistance single handedly.

Legion with the Best Name: V Macedonia, for some reason, the history of this legion as being one of the longest and most celebrated army groups in history makes them fascinating to read.

Go-to Legion: Legio III Gallica. Never lose. Well they have lost of course but when they were extremly out numbered and even then they did a hell of alot of damage to the enemy. I have them campaign in Gaul, Iberia, Africa, the middle east. Everywhere.

Best Dressed 08: Legio XXII Primigenia. I love the white shields.

Worst Dressed 08: I like them all.

The Little Legion That Couldn't: None. Just got to know how to command.

Favorite Legion: Same as my go to. Legio III Gallica. They just know how to get the job done.

The Little Legion That Could: Legio XXII Primigenia. There almost as tough as Legio III.

Legion with the Best Name: Legio VI Victrix Pia Fidelis. I just like the way it sounds.

Go-to Legion: Legio III Galica - i can always rely on them (so did Caesar).

Best Dressed '08: Legio I Minervia Pia Fidelis Domitiana - i like their shields and especially their banner!

The Little Legion That Couldn't: I don't have a legion like that, only Varus had - 3 of them.

Favorite Legion: Legio XXI Rapax (Predator) - i love them because of the name that should induce fear in every enemy that is facing them.
The Little Legion That Could: Every legion that i have.

Legion with the Best Name: Legio XXI Rapax (Predator)
