    Default Proof against Nostradamus

God knows if this should be here...

Anyhoo, I recently watched something about a lost book of Nostradamus on the History Channel. The fact that they didn't have anything about the British Empire, arguably the strongest power between Nostradamus day and today, or about Spain the super-power of Nostradamus' day is the most convincing argument that there is nothing to these hugely influential prophecies.
They even had some psychic-cum-historian trying to claim France was more powerful than Spain during Nostradamus' own lifetime, which as any historian will tell you is nonsense.
Until I see a single prophecy regarding either of these empires I continue to believe these prophecies are a load of bollocks

I thought the fact that it is all just a bunch of vague **** that anyone could have come up with was proof enough.

But the fact that the cultists who believe cannot make anything stick on these paticularly important areas is something which struck me as definative proof

Nostradamus should have just stayed as a doctor and not become some mystical man. How do we even know what he is referring to? He lived hundreds of years ago and may be referring to events that never happened or will occur in the future.

It has been proven quite well that what Nostradamus wrote was a caracature of events unfolding at the time he lived, a basic laugh at people in power and things that they did. It's just to protect himself from the authorities he wrote in a vague style as a "prophet" or "seer" foretelling events to come instead of poking at the people of the time.
Later events that solidified his writing to be remembered as a foretelling work is the myth that several years after he died grave-robbers went to rob his crypt only to find a medallian in his dead hands that had the exact date, month day year, that his grave would be robbed.
Lacking this evidence, I would have to say that people who fostered his writings as actual fortunes and prophecies were high on the same drug as Moses. (see Gary88's thread "Funniest Headline Ever" also here in the Ethos)

Well, straight dope says so, it must be true.
Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is Im not. I honestly feel that America is the best country and all other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

They were all so vague they could mean anything for instance here is one I made earlier

The great city of man will be thrown down by a great fire of destruction.

Basically for this to be true I need for some city of a reasonable size to be burnt down or hit by a meteor or attacked in a war in the next 1000 years so yeah it is not hard

Though I don't believe that Nostradamus was anything special, I do not see how pointing out that he failed to predict certain things is proof that he couldn't see the future. At most, it shows he didn't predict these things.

He who joyfully marches to music rank and file, has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would surely suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action. It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.

It's easy to be a prophet as long as you're keep being vague.

If you be vague about the things you say they will always come true in a large time interval.

Wasn't that a French king. I think National Geographic documentary about him said it was a French king.

The "Rise of Hitler" one is garbage. He made a typically garbled quatrain about "the Hister" - which is an ancient name for the River Danube - that had nothing to do with Hitler. But close enough is good enough when it comes to our New Age friends, so somehow this becomes something about Hitler.

    Go figure.
