Please Kill Me. The Uncensored Oral History of Punk.

Just started reading this book and it has been amazing read so far. I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in birth of Punk or what happens behind the stage in music cirlces. What these guys didn't do? Huh...
I occasionally browse through my copy and it's one hell of a ride going through that seamy underside of the NYC music scene of the time. Such characters one would never see again, at least in a long, long, time.

Have you come across John Robb's Punk Rock: An Oral History? Good take on the British version of Please Kill Me.

I am always impressed by Kim Stanley Robinson, but I have been putting off reading this because it starts by cutting out almost everything I know about the world after 1405.

The premise is that the Black Death had killed 99% of Europeans by 1405 instead of just 60%. This leaves the whole of history up to the present day to be re-written.

You may think that this would lead to a dry dusty list of battles, dates and dynasties, or perhaps to a disjointed series of episodes (like in Canticle for Leibowitz). But not a bit of it, the way the story is actually told is actually quite astonishing, so I won't spoil the surprise for anyone intending to read this.

Juvenal: Looks like an interesting book.

Celsius: Heh, the only thing I like about Law lit is reading transcriptions of famous cases. It's fascinating to read the different strategies Lawyers used in trying to win their cases.

tco: Can never go wrong with that.

Currenty I'm reading the "Lords of Rome" (free title translaton by myself ) from Alan Massie... Just finished the last one, except for Augustus..I really reccomend Tiberius. Also another really good, but always way unerated book I'dl ike to reccomend is the "Hitchhiker guide's to the galaxy" 5-book series...it seems like just another sci-fi crap but actually is a genial critic to absolutely everything in the world we live in...from people who like to party too much to advanced polictics. Of course the book speaks with metaphors, but you think a bit you can decifrate them...

It's a short book only 88 pages, but it chronicles the wars fought by the various tribes against the army during the 1800's. Focusing on the actual 'battles' rather wider cultural history it's based on eyewitness accounts and doesn't pull any punches. One of the best books I've ever read, (if a bit depressing) ..

I will definitely put that one on my list

Currently reading 'Stom from the East, From Genghis Khan to Khubilai Khan' by Robert Marshall. Best book (even though it's a tad old) on the Mongols from the local Library.

I am currently reading, "The Golden Bough" by Sir James Frazer. It is quite a read! I know that there are different editions out there, but being fascinated with religion and mysticism in the history of the world, I decided to savor every word of this massive work .

Only about 200 pages in, but it's getting very interesting. Probably should be required for Americans, at least made standard curriculum in college courses or high school or something (though I may eat my words once I've finished the book, I don't know if its controversial or anything)
