I just finished Heinz Guderian's Achtung Panzer!

Guderian was the finest of Hitler's panzer commanders, and played a decisive role in establishing, expanding and directing the Wehrmacht's terrifying armoured and motorised forces.

The book was written in 1937, at a time when the Soviets had initiated a thorough reorganisation (if the mass terror or the purges can be cloaked in such a bland term) and Hitler's regime found itself in an increasingly complex diplomatic environment. It seeks to defend the current state of the armoured forces and advocates the doctrine and concomitant resources needed to succeed in the coming war.

Guderian reviews the performance of armour in WWI with clarity and almost no emotion: he regrets Germany's defeat and the unfair peace, but there's no insane ranting about "Bolshevist Jewry" or the stupid stab in the back theory. I found the battle names confusing (Second Marne is called Soissons, and there's a few others I had to look at the footnotes for) but I have a far stronger grasp of the events in battle on the western Front having read this.

His assessment of each of the thee main opponents (Russia, France and Britain) are extremely prescient and his presentation of Wehrmacht armoured doctrine absolutely crystal clear-he even notes the critical weakness in fuel production. Its evident his doctrine was carried out as Nazi successes in WWI were not carried out with wunderwaffen but boring old Pzkw I, II and III's in the most part: it was only in 1942 that the IV was the most numerous battle tank. These successes were gained against numerically superior opposition with strong defensive positions and for the most part superior equipment: for example the French mechanized infantry were equipped with half-tracks, most German Panzergrenadiers rode in plain trucks, and by the numbers the french forces in 11940 had a greater weight of calibre, armour and numbers.

I would rate Achtung Panzer! as the most important book of the 20th century. It is the expression of a successful military doctrine, and also a defense of its retention, by Hitler's forces. Without this armoured doctrine Germany in 1939 would have fared worse than the Reich in 1914. In short, Guderian and his handful of superiors and supporters enabled Hitler's vile regime to wreak untold suffering on all Europe.

    "Steel Wind" by David Zabecki.
He shows in this (sadly very short) great book, how Georg Bruchmüller of the Imperial German Army developed the use of modern Artillery up to day... and how Luddendorf wasted it all at the Western Front :-)

    https://www.amazon.de/Steel-Wind-Bru...2894000&sr=8-8

A litte bit expensive for such a small book, but very helpful if you ever get the pleasure to command a unit of Artillery.

    Finished this last night.

    Quite boring towards the end.
    The movie's better.

I liked the Narrator intervening all over the place.
    That was fun.

I'm reading Oscar and Lucinda, an example of everything I dislike about Australian literature, its way too nostalgic.

Next up is Flashman, then a few Warhammer 40k books.

    Finally finished it.
Lord, have mercy! Longest, most boring book I've ever read.

This is a story about digging. They dig and dig and dig all the way to page 750, then the action starts at around page 899.
Turns out that our new alien overlords aren't really that smart, the humans are even dumber and Chekov's Gun doesn't fire (most frustrating part of the book).
If long tales with convoluted plots that go nowhere are your thing, then this is the book for you!

Of course, Stephen King is the GOAT but this piece here is one of his duds.
And it took him 5 years to finish it.

Good God in Heaven! (and I'm an atheist)...

Laura Clery tells the world about herself in this aptly named book.
    Seriously though?
Best art advice I've ever got.

I now read (in one go, it's not a particularly long book) Hardy's "A Mathematician's Apology".

What follows is the rather excellent ending to this work:

I didn't expect the end to be quite so poetic.
Then again, Hardy does state in this book that he is fond of philosophy.

The introduction is fascinating, I haven't read the historical occult part itself already. From the affairs mentionned by the author I found the case of Guichard of Troyes, and read contemporary texts about his trial(in french).

The sociologic analysis about who written these treaties of necromancy is extremely interesting and brilliant.

But I'm not sure I will read the Rites part itself, I'm a bit superstitious. Noneless, the introduction is worthy, its very different from what you may expect with witches and subpart healers. I mean, this is what I was expecting, but I was wrong.

I am reading the Three Body Problem.
I was ready to give up in the first chapter, cause that (imo) is not inviting at all.
But I am now 1/4rth into the first book, and it is enjoyable

Only 5 more to go (after this one). I remember my reading of them. It's quite the endeavor but absolutely worth it.

Myself is re-reading The Hobbit, the 2020 Illustrated version by Alan Lee. I got the boxed set for Christmas containing The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, all illustrated.

Indeed. That is the legendary left thumb of the Turk.

I'm eager to see what they have done with the trilogy.

    Epic book.
Sets up the whole Siege affair rather nicely.

    Questions answered within:

    1. Which Chaos warrior was first on the Wall?
    2. Who wins in a duel between Raldoron, First Captain of the Blood Angels and Lord Skraivok, the Painted Count, of the Night Lords?
    3. How did Horus fight the Emperor in the warp?
    4. How do you survive as a human outside the Palace during the landing of the Chaos forces?
    5. Which Chaos Primarch is smartest?
    6. Who's the next Champion of Chaos?
    7. Are siege towers still used in the future?

    Well done.
