Looking for historical sources

I'm specifically looking for sources regarding Elite Hoplites. I haven't come across anything like them in my reading yet.

References to detachments of "picked", therefore superior/elite soldiers can be found in most of the ancient texts. In the context of Greek city-states, these elite soldiers would naturally be hoplites. A reference: Xenophon, Hellenika, 5.3.22-23.

If, however, you mean sources refering specifically to equipment/training/marshalling, I cannot think of anything out of the top of my head.

Yeah, I've found plenty of these passages. To my understanding, though, these were men picked out of already existing units to be used only in certain operations, rather than the elite units that show up in the game.

Oh well. I was just curious.

That is correct - and it's not the only instance when the RTW engine does not provide an accurate picture of ancient warfare.

Then Herodotus was a layer and the King Alexandros 1st who said to the greek camp the night before the batlle of Platae that he and his "nation'were greeks were layers!!!!

Umm, I don't think anyone says the Macedonians were Slavs, in this mod, they even have Hellenic culture when it comes to cities, buildings and calculating culture penalties. Yes the quote from Herodotos you mention is often an overlooked one, but it doesn't prove much apart from indicating that the ruling class of the Macedonians considered themselves as Greeks for xyz reasons.

I honestly doubt those heated questions provoked by modern nationalism would have made much sense to a Macedonian of the times; if you asked them what they were, they would probably say they were subjects of x king, from y city, their father was z and they did such and such for a living. Trying to define national boundaries in the ancient world is quite fruitless and has more often to do with modern nationalism than anything else; what you can talk really about is just language, culture and relations between cities.

And yes, it is better if you bring these questions to a different section of teh TW forums, this here is just for discussing the mod, tactics, tech support etc.
