Gary Gygax has left the game

One of the founders and arguably the creator of the dungeons and Dragons diced based role playing system that has evolved into so many other games and genres has passed away at 69.

He will surely live on in the legacy of role playing around the world that he has left behind.

...if you mean by 55 you mean 69.
Well, it's a shame. Man had a tremendous impact on gaming culture.

I remember buying my first cloth-bound D+D rule book and some dice. It was like being initiated into a secret world. I still have the dice in an old tin in the flat. Old friends in my hand . . .

Quick someone cast resurrect on him! RIP King of the Geeks (and I mean that lovingly as a semi geek myself).

Once upon a time I played wargames US-style (hex maps and cardboard counters).

Then I read in my gaming magazine an account of a D&D game. It read like a story, I just couldn't understand how a set of rules could guide such a thing.

I had to wait until University to discover the delights of role playing and the omnipotence of the Dungeon Master.

Thank you Gary Gygax, you have done your bit to foster that Sense of Wonder that makes life a more joyous experience.

I just sent a text to my brother with the news, since he and I played AD&D together back in the very early 80s. His reply:

"How did he die? Fall into a pit of spikes? Eaten by driver ants? Is there a 14th level Cleric around to cast a resurrection spell? Most importantly, who gets all his electrum pieces?"

Ah happy memories of the time before we discovered girls ...

RIP Mr Gygaz. The nerds of the world salute you.
