    Default Roman infantry

ok im with the polybian reforms right now and im a bit dissapointed.

I was defending massilia against a equally sized lusotana army. And this is what happend.

They totally OWNED all my infantry on the walls, i won because of the time limit. But thats not what buggered me. One of the caetrari(sp) light infantryt annihalated 2 of my triarii. WTF is going on?

The armour piercing attribute is what's going on. Forget about engaging them hand to hand on the walls and just hit them in the back with missiles.

i would think the romans are underpowerd at the moment, hand to hand they just lose WAY to much

Triarii aren't that good; they're supposed to be last ditch men. Though they are good against cavalry in cities, they can hold their own for ages.

I find Camillian (never mind the better Polybian) troops quite effective on the battlefield, just less so in a siege situation. I've had the reforms but haven't upgraded my MIC yet, so I can't say how I've found Polybian troops yet.

Like most heavier infantry, the higher-end Roman units rely pretty heavily on their armour value for combat survivability.

Which is why nasty little buggers like Caetrati that have nothing but armour-piercing weapons tend to kind of hurt them. A lot.

I'm having real trouble with those Thracian elites in my game, other units I'm fine, but they slice through my heavies like butter. And not even my general charging into their rear seems to do much harm.

Hard campaign difficulty and medium battle difficult I find are the optimum mix.

Their AP falx is your problem there. Hit them with missles.

The game's designed to be played with medium battle difficulty. Very hard's just pushing it.

Those Thracian Elites butcher everything. AP falx plus .26 lethality. Very tough guys. So yeah, kill them from a distance if possible.

I guess just as Gaesatae are with Gallic factions, those Thracians are my slingers new top target when fighting Makedonia and Epeiros.

It's rhomphaias they're swinging - those should actually have lethality at 0.285...

And you know something else ? Last I checked, the 1.0 version of the unit actually had lower stats than it by rights should.

VH difficulty is pushing it... this was balanced for Medium? Is this from the EB team, or just a general consensus? I've been looking to make EB a bit harder, and H/H wasn't cutting it... I figured the 'nigh-impossible' campaigns were balanced for H/VH like Roma Surrectum.

VH battles are wont to get your high-end shock infantry mauled by knife-wielding skirmishers, to put it in concrete terms. Don't use battle difficulties above Medium unless you're into that kind of challenge.

    ...and whips'n'chains.

And, yeah, that's the official word on the matter.
