That time of the year has rolled around again, yes, I'm speaking of March, known as Women's History Month in America. Some may remember my recent post about black history month and I'm just wondering if you all feel the same about women's history month. Should we give an entire month to the celebration of the deeds of one sex, females, as we give a month to celebrate the deeds of one race, blacks, in february? Doesn't this just endorse the belief that we are all somehow different instead of fostering equality? After all, isn't a bit insulting to women to have a month dedicated to their deeds, as if they need a month of recognition due to not being recognized enough all the time for their deeds? Shouldn't we just commemorate the deeds of great "people" instead of great "women" or great "blacks"?
America seems to love embracing this idea of different but equal but that is not true equality. True equality can only be achieved when we stop shaming and celebrating people based upon factors that are out of their control, such as being born black or being born female. I always find it so damned stupid when people ask me if I'm proud to be Italian on Columbus day as if I should be so damned proud to be of the same ethnicity of a man who lived 500 years ago. Am I wrong?
