Royal blood my #$$

OK, just a minor gripe, but I like to play as if it means something to keep the original bloodline going since it makes for fun role play. However, I noticed that my blood related sons are almost always inferior to guys who I can get offered for adoption or want a princess. I had a king with maxed chivalry, piety and command who had sucessfully crusaded twice marry a charming wife is wise and popular princess and they had 4 kids who I had to kill off so they wouldn't ruin my kingdom! They were each sent on different paths (castle, capital, cathedral) and it didn't matter, they were all not even good candidates for man of the hour. This has happened more than once, any tips on getting some results from my careful breeding program?!?
