Default Unified stats for all modifications?

    Ave!

I post this in your forum because it is the most frequented of RTW and BI (should I do this in a more "general" thread:hmmm:... by the way I can't wait for your next mini-campaign)

    Well, the question is that:
Since most mods for RTW and BI deal with ages prior to gunpowder and nearly all aim at historical accuracy... what about to reunite many researchers and create a "table for unit stats" to wich all modders could refer in order to make battles the most realistic? Such table should consider all unit qualities (weapons, shields, armors, training, morale, mounts...) and apply to all stats (including for example charge distances, bonuses, formations, terrain movement modifiers...). It could really improve the experience of all mods!

I proposed something like that to the boys of 77BC/58BC and they took it in consideration, but I had only few books to refer, nor I could accurately test everything and it applied only to some examples of Caesarian age units.

Thanks in advance for any reply

That's very hard to foresee, really. Two reasons for that:

-every mod has its own mixture of units that need to be compared one to another. Since most mods do not agree on the list of units that need to "make it in" (thank goodness for that - otherwise we'd have one boring slum), it means that the points of reference can never be the same.

-every mod has its own approach to the "feel of the battle". Some like it short and hot, some long to allow chess-like manoeuvring and build-up of forces. One major way to achieve this is through the attack/defence general ratio and the approach to HPs.

Finally, I find it very hard to even think about assigning an absolute value to, say, the strike of the gladius. It's not something that you can quantify. All you can do is approximate the relative worth of a band of legionaries versus a band of something else. It's more of an art than a science...

Not absolute, but there are relative stats. For example, gladius should have more attack power than a knife. And a linen armour should be weaker than mail and bronze breastplate. By listing all the the relative stats for all weapons and armours, horses etc, it's possible to construct unified stats, which may not be realistic but reasonable under most circumstances.

Balancing the unit stats within a mod is definitely an art form in my opinion, and a mod can be judged in many ways by how well it achieves this balance.

I'm not aware of any two mods that use exactly the same settings, although no doubt there will be similarities, but I don't think it's either necessary or desirable, as long as there is good balance within the mod itself. Imagine if all beers tasted the same!

Most mods are designed to give the most "realistic" results in battle on the M/M setting and I feel for the designers, who work hours achieving the best balance for their mods, only to see it all negated by the bonuses given on H and VH.

When I started wargaming with metal miniatures, I well remember using a very popular and almost universal set of rules for the ancient period. It was generally considered that the balance achieved in these rules was so good that they were used in competitions, where it was common practice for players to construct their favourite armies, using a points system, from anywhere within a 3,000 year time period. Norman knights would be seen attacking Roman legions: the Anglo-Saxon Fyrd smashing itself on Alexander's phalanx. How about that for realism? Absolutely crazy!
