Default William F Buckley remembered here

    LINK

Any one of William F. Buckley Jr.'s many achievements - in politics, publishing, television, even world-class sailing - might have been enough to merit the attention he received during the past half century.

But Buckley had accomplishments to spare: founder and longtime editor of the influential conservative journal National Review, host of TV's "Firing Line" for 33 years, popular syndicated columnist, author of some 50 books, including novels. Beyond that, he was generally acknowledged as the father of modern conservatism.

Known for both his charm and erudition, Buckley died yesterday morning in the study of his home in Stamford, Conn., at age 82. Linda Bridges, his literary assistant, said Buckley's cook found him at about 10 a.m. Though he had emphysema, she said, his death was a surprise to family and colleagues.
So the "Father of modern conservatism", founder of the National Review, a man known for his eloquence as well as his conservatism, has passed away. This is a thread to remember, discuss his legacy and achievements, etc.

Man Buckley is gonna be missed, I posted his death in the mudpit I grew up watching/listening to him on Firing Line and he influenced my way of thinking quite a bit. He is a true icon for conservatism without any of this neocon nonsense and definitely sad to see him die. He was always so great to just sit there and not be afraid to debate anyone and doing it with total class, the Vidal thing was probably one of few times he was in your face but then Gore deserved it I love that video and the look on Buckley's face as he says it....

The best part of that whole debate to me is the fact that they were passionate enough to lose control of their tempers for a minute. You don't really see too much of that anymore. Also, they (both Buckley and Vidal) sounded so much cooler and more intelligent than pundits today, even when calling each other "nazi" or "queer".

I saw him speak when he came to Indiana University, quite the engaging speaker.
As a teenager, I was taken to various houses and flats above takeaways in the north of England, to be beaten, tortured and raped over 100 times. I was called a “white slag” and “white ****” as they beat me.

    aint that the truth.

I think the Choamsky (however you spell it) Buckley debate was the better one.
Sure I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is Im not. I honestly feel that America is the best country and all other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism.

Yeah though Chomsky probably did "win" that debate...not that he was right but he just got his point of view over better but that was the greatest of WFB how many people now a days would even bother with such clashes.

Yeah he was generally a pretty impressive man, his son is no slouch either and a very good writer (political satire mostly).

He was sent off to school in Paris at an early age and raised by a Mexican nanny so that would explain it. His family was old school wealth with shipping kids off to school at early age

I'm not a Buckley fan. He expelled the libertarians, isolationists, and nativists from the conservative movement, leaving it and America worse off.

I wonder why he would do that?

Maybe because he realised how they were keeping it down?

An interesting article by Henry Binswanger about the death of William F. Buckley, Jr.

"Ayn Rand told me that in the years following her public condemnations of Buckley, he sent her more than one letter "crawling on his knees" (her words) trying to get her approval and/or a rapproachment. Needless to say, he failed in this attempt."

That had to be my favorite part.

Well the Randoids hate how his magazine rightly savaged Atlas Shrugged.

Yeah Buckley needed Rands Approval. I think its the other way around, at least until Buckley and his friends showed she basicly stole all her ideas from Neitzhe.

The destruction of Gail Wynand in The Fountainhead is an example of her later view, a rejection of Nietzsche, that the great cannot succeed by sacrificing the masses: "her [1934] journals suggest a rejection of traditional false-alternative ethics. Her May 15 entry, for example, identifies the error of Nietzscheans such as Gail Wynand: in trying to achieve power, they use the masses, but at the cost of their ideals and standards, and thus become 'a slave to those masses.' The independent man, therefore, will not make his success dependent upon the masses."[35] Although Rand disagreed with many of Nietzsche's ideas, the introduction to the 25th anniversary edition of The Fountainhead concludes with Nietzsche's statement, "The noble soul has reverence for itself."

    Actually it's more like this:

“Ayn Rand is dead,” wrote conservative author William F. Buckley in an obituary column in 1982. “So, incidentally, is the philosophy she sought to launch dead; it was in fact stillborn.”

It was stuff like that, that led to the true hate of Buckley by Objectivsts.
