    Default Closing your gates

This bothers me SOOOOOO much. I take some calvary out to stop an approaching tower/ladder/art/ram and upon returning into the city/castle nobody bothers to shut the gate, therfore defeating the purpose all together.

Is there a fix or a way to shut the gates after they open? btw, this doesn't always happen. It's weird. And I do have guys on the wall above the gate.

Try retreating back through a side gate without troops on it and move the cavalry further back from the gate.

    It happened to me once.
It was because when you run cavalry through an infantry unit, its men are pushed away by the cavalry. In my case the gate were left open because a single heavy billman was stuck in them. I had to order the unit all over the place a couple of times to make him move away from the gate, which then closed after a few moments.
So, look for lone infantrymen stuck under the gatehouse who were pushed there by the sallying cavalry. Click on them to select their unit and make them move.

    Hope it helps.

The unit doesnt need to be actually in the gate for this to happen, just close to it. I suppose this is to stop the gate from closing at the wrong time when you are sallying or something.

This always happens to me if I'm horse'shoed around the gate, so just move your infantry back a little till it closes, then go ahead and re place them in position. Also make sure to get your cavalry out of the way as soon as they get through the gate. Not only will this help the gate close properly, it will stop them getting chewed up when the bad guys arrive.
    I love you all!

I think I always fixed the problem by ordering all the units around the gate to stop, then the gate would close even if I have units stuck in it or outside.

Thanks for the input guys. I assumed this was the issue (people to close or in the gate)

Just annoying and I needed to vent. There should be a button to open/close the gate and of course to dump buring oil

I'd leave the gates open, allow the enemy king to get near, And then shut the gates... Muahah.

Yea, the gates have behaved very strange for me too. Yesterday, I was attacking a castle and the enemy had a second army in the field. I took the first wall of the castle before the field army approached. I had archers on the gate and nobody else close to the gate. The gate would not close. But, when the enemy spearmen reached the gate, they stopped at the gate like there was an invisible force field. Archers shot the spearmen until they broke. Then as each unit broke, they were suddenly able to run through the gate. :hmmm:???????????

I do hate the it when the enemy sallys its army out of the settlement, You then rush your general behind them taking care of the archers, then entering the desserted Settlement and capturing the gates. Only to find that those gates you captured arn't really yours because the enemy can still enter through them.

    Which is like... Silly.
