As a big history buff, one of the things I love about the total war series is the challenge of recreating history. One of the things I dislike about the total war series is the relaltively narrow scope (all Europe all the time) Most of the mods, especially those for RTW and BI do a good job adding new time periods, factions, units and environments to the Total War experience, but I want some more time periods and places to fight my battles, so here are some mods I'd like to see...
Warring States of China...Yes a Chinese mod team started this one, but it died. This particular era is seminal to the development of Chinese culture and government, and a chance to crush the upstart Qin is too good to pass up. I'd use the RTW engine for this one.
The Rise of Islam...the 'dark ages' in general are all but untouched by Total War, and the Rise of Islam is a timeframe ripe with possiabilities. RTW engine for this one.
The Greek City states...As the HTW mod for MTWVI has effectivly died (I can't find a working installer for the life of me) this is a period and area that has fallen by the wayside. The Hegemonia and Persian Invasion mods look promising, but they may not get off the ground. RTW for this one.
The Vikings...the Viking Total War mod looks promising, but it may not see the light of day. Actually, the MTWVI engine may work better for this one as you can have multiple campaigns, more factions overall, and staggered campaign start dates.
India...India in general is criminially underused in Total War (even EB doesn't have an Indian faction), with only Rise of Persia, Ancient Total War and the forthcoming Asia ton Barbaron (which may not make it) having an Indian faction. Indian history is filled with the rise of huge empires, the collapse of central authority, and invasion from beyond its borders, which makes perfect fodder for a Total War game/mod.
Southeast Asia...Vietnam, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, China, and the various states that make up what is now Mayalsia have a long and bloody history of conflict, trade, and religious conversion, with China often playing the 'heavy'. The one issue with this region is research. Thier isn't a lot available excepted educated guesses on the nature of the militaries of the powerful ancedents of the modern states we are all familiar with. It could be fun though.
Wars of China...The Three Kingdoms (subject of a good but buggy mod for RTW-BI) isn't the only timeframe in Chinese history with blood, guts and glory. The Jin Dynasty/rise of the Tang, the Song dynasty, the revolt of the Ming and the War of the Three Fuedatories all would make great mods for either RTW or MTW.
Sub-Saharan Africa...the region of the Sahel, the river Niger and the Horn of Africa was a realm of warring Empires, aquistive city-states and religious warfare all the way up to the coming of the Europeans in the mid-late 19th century. Dinstinctive units and cultures could make a mod set in this region interesting to say the least, no matter which timeframe is chosen.
Empire Total Wars does offer some intriguing possiabilites (the Independence wars of Latin America, the Taiping Rebellion, the rise and fall of the Zulus, the rise of Germany, Napoleonic/French revolutionary wars and the fall of the Ottomans to name just a few.), but I'm afraid they may take the safe route and go all-Europe again.
These aren't demands, just suggestions. As a fan community, it could be great fun to expand Total War beyond just Europe and the Middle East. There's a whole world out there to conquer.
