I would really like to watch some movies that involve the Roman Empire, movies such as Gladiator, but I have already watched the a million times. Are there any good movies out there fitting this era? And to be specific, I was hoping maybe for one focused on the combat aspect, one such as the early battle in Gladiator, but the entire movie like that. However any good movie of this time will do. Thanks.

    Sparticus.
According to the Theory of War, which teaches that the best way to avoid the inconvenience of war is to pursue it away from your own country, it is more sensible for us to fight our notorious enemy in his own realm, with the joint power of our allies, than it is to wait for him at our own doors.

The Last Legion. At long last the link between Julius Caesar and King Arthur is revealed.

The Last Legion. It has that guy from Rome and Gandhi.

Also it has Romulus Augustulus. No movie can be more Roman that one that has somebody named after both Romulus and Augustus!!!! OOoooooo

Plus it has Byzantines, repeating ballistas, testudos and !!! Odoacer (go him! Up Germania!) !!!. OMG OMG OMG I creamed my pants.

I think the people that suggest the Last Legion are joking.

At least I hope the are. Do not watch that movie unless you like wasting two hours. It doesn't have historical accuracy, nor drama, nor good acting, nor...nornornornor

I'm still angry I wasted a few hours of my life watching it. A big disappointment.

Well I think it's an ok-ish movie. The script is dodgy and story is a bit stupid but it's ok as entertainment. I'd give it no more than a 7/10 though and that might be a bit kind. I give it at least a few points for the opportunity to gaze upon the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai although her character was ridiculous. The great Ben Kingsley seems to take any role on offer these days lol.

Agreed one of a few classic movies I still love along with Cleopatra, El Cid, Ben Hur, Spartacus and The Vikings.

Yah like King Edward said Sparticus is a pretty good movie. Just dont expect to see the Romans doing anything but getting beat up until the last battle though.

    Some good entertaining Roman-era movies:
    - Gladiator
    - Spartacus (the one starring Douglas)
    - Fall of the Roman Empire
    - Ben Hur
    - Cleopatra (the classic one starring Elizabeth Taylor)
    - Scipio Africanus (a very, very old classic made during Mussolini's time)
    - Julius Caesar (starring Marlon Brando)

    Made-for-T.V:
    - HBO's Rome (highly-recommended!)
    - Masada (the Romans lay siege to the Jewish stronghold of Masada)
    - Druids (a cheesy-fun mini-series about Vercingetorix)
    - Attila (good movie, but don't watch it for the battles)
    - Cleopatra (starring Timothy Dalton)
    - Hannibal (starring Alexander Siddig)

    Worth Mentioning:
    - King Arthur (it's not that bad really)(starring Clive Owen)
    - Roar (made-for-t.v. series about the Roman occupation of Britain)(semi-fantasy)

    Avoid these like the plague:
    - Augustus (starring Peter O'Toole and Charlotte Rampling)
    - Hannibal (starring Victor Mature)
    - Warrior Queen (starring Alex Kingston)
    - Caligula (tries to be artsy)

I'd add that Alexander the Great, the 50s version, is very good (dealing with the classical period and not just Rome). I second Marlon Brando's Julius Caesar. Didn't know Mussolini's Scipio Africanus was that available, as absolutely no rental store has it, and even Amazon barely finds a listing for it.

    Avoid these like the plague:

down and lick the hand that feeds you,
and may posterity forget that ye were
    our countrymen."

There is an old movie called Dacii, its about the roman invaison of Dacia, of course it was made in Communist Romania so its baised towards the Dacians and thier ressitance of the romans, but I enjoyed it nevertheless, even with crapy special effects.

The Passion of the Christ is quite good. Not about Romans as such, but set during the Roman era.

It's about a chap who lives in Jerusalem who gets caught by the Romans when his mate stitches him up. Everyone reckons that the bloke is a bit naughty, so the Romans give him a slap on the wrist. All the while, the devil's loving it. So, off they go for a stroll to the top of a mountain, where he falls asleep on a big cross (probably tired 'cos he had to carry it all the way up). Then there's a big earthquake and the Romans are all like "Oh, noez!". The fella then wakes up in a cave and is like, "WTF?!1". The end. I think there's a book about it or something.

The Passion of the Christ is just 2 hours of Romans beating the **** out of some dude. Don't care. I'm not one for mindless violence.

have they made on a film based on the fall on constantinople in 1453AD i am quite surprised they haven't since it could be the last remants of ancient rome.

I am quite surpsied since this was prehaps of the decisive turns in world history that laid down the foundation of ottoman turk hegomany in eastern europe.

lol i am sure it would be very popular in greece.

Spartacus was great i can't forget how good that film is and the fall of the roman empire with christopher plummer as commodus was fantastic!!
