Default When can I build mines?

Hey guys, I just recently conquered Dublin from the rebels and I noticed a silver deposit nearby which said I should "Build a mine from the nearby settlement". Ok, the only settlement nearby is Dublin and theres no option to build a mine there.

My question is what level of town/city is required to start building mines?

As as aside ...why is there only 1 town on that whole island? Seems like a complete waste of space to me.

You can start to build mines in a large town and there is a lot of wasted space in the game but it's for balance. There are mods that will give you much more lands. In my opinion there is enough in vanilla mainly because I already have about 300,000 florins by the time the mongols even invade (8 settlements). I'm probably going to tone down the value of resources and trade income so it's harder to make money. I do like fighting tons of stacks of enemies though lol. If you go to the building browser it will tell you when you can construct things and what you get when you do.

Large town, gotcha. Thanks for the info, mate. It looks like only certain places have anything to mine at all.

On the wasted space front, they could have put in 3-5 extra towns on just that one island, lol.

It's a much better amount of regions than RTW though. I was so surprised at how little the amount of regions was in RTW. I can't wait until someone mods MTW2 into a rome mod. I'd do it, but for one person it would take a long time. Sorry about my ramble guys lol.

In Vanilla theres just 2 factions that fight for the isles. So 1 settlement is enough. Anyway, it would be foolish to put so many settlements on one island cause it takes settlements away from the crowded areas..

In about every campaign I play Portugal takes Dublin anyway lol

Portugal?! lol, thats crazy. Granted I've only played so far as England or Spain (and haven't even finished a game with them yet heh) I couldn't give definitive examples but in my England game I took Dublin. The pope even sent me a mission to do so. I have to think though that if I hadn't taken it, Scotland would have since they had already grabbed Inverness.

Oh, and this is off topic sorry but, in my English game I have Rennes, Caen and Bruges and am attacking Antwerp (another mission from pope) and I keep having the French armies all in my borders. They aren't attacking or anything but it makes me nervous. I can't push them out beyond attacking them and causing a war apparently. I was under the impression that an army would cause "devastation" around them in some other persons area. These French armies don't seem to be doing that that I can see (I have trade rights with them thats it) but, as said, it makes me nervous to have armies not under my control that close to my cities.

Anything I can do to shoo them away besides just attacking them?

It is my understanding that an army only causes devastation in your lands if you are at war with them.

The French on your border are a real threat. A neighbor will, in general, attack your cities if they are not well defended. There are several options open for you:

1.) Park a large force right next to the potential attacker. Make sure your stack is uphill of the intruder, and if possible, between them and the city. I have found they often take the hint and go home.

2.) Bolster your cities defenses, making it a less tempting target. This is a proven method of discouraging attackers.

3.) Park a stack next to one of the potential aggressor's cities. This might backfire, and will likely worsen relations with the target faction. But often the faction will pull its forces back away from your cities to protect theirs.

4.) The technique I like most is to build several partial stacks which are just capable of taking the enemy's cities. When they attack your city, attack 3 of theirs. They will pull back the stack attacking your city (thus you have saved it). And you get 2 or maybe even 3 of the enemy's cities, AND they take the hit for starting the war. Gotta love it!

Ooo #4 is nice! I love the overreaction for the slightest wrongs philosophy, heh.

Yeah, I think I only have like 2 spearmen and 2 peasant archers in Caen (which is where they are all seeming to congregate along with a spy and a diplomat). I guess I'll make some more units for them. Problem is I have an army stack in Rennes trapped because of plague and my other army on the mainland is attacking Antwerp for the damn pope. Meanwhile the only armies I have on the Isles are attempting to wipe out Scotland so aren't in any position to reinforce the mainland anytime soon. I would just rather not get into a war with France -at this time- until Scotland and, atleast, Antwerp are taken care of ..oh and having the plague run its course in Rennes would be nice too. =/

Speaking of the plague, I have a spy in Rennes who is affected by the plague whom I could send to some French cities/castles and infect them but I'm not sure how long the plague lasts and I'm going to be going to war against them within 5-7 turns anyways.

I wanted at least two cities in Ireland maybe three. Give the Scots something to try for.

I know this is sorta off topic, but as we're talking about Ireland, are there any mods(non-Kingdoms) that have Ireland as a faction? Would love to play as the Irish!!

DLV - Deus lo Vult has an Irish faction. It uses a bigger map, so there's 5 Irish regions, and a stackload of special units for them (they even get mounted missile units).

... don't actually know about any of the other mods.
