    Default The National Anthem Thread

We're all nationalists here...or at least a lot of us are. I'm pretty sure everyone loves their country to some degree. So why don't we all share that love of our countries by sharing our national anthems. (I don't know if this would fit better here or in The Arts).

    O Canada!
    Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

    And now, en francais!

    Ô Canada!
    Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
    Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
    Protégera nos foyers et nos droits;
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

And what post from the resident British Nationalist would be complete without God Save the Queen

    God save our gracious Queen,
    Long live our noble Queen
    God Save the Queen,
    Send her victorious!
    Happy and glorious,
    Long to reign over us,
    God Save the Queen!

    Our loved Dominion bless
    With peace and happiness
    From shore to shore;
    And let our Empire be
    Loyal, united, free
    True to herself and Thee
    God save the Queen

    O Lord our God arise,
    Scatter her enemies,
    and make them fall;
    Confound their politics,
    Frustrate their navish tricks,
On thee our hopes we fix,
    God save us all.

    Thy Choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour,
    Long may she reign;
    May she defend our laws,
    And ever give us cause,
To sing with heart and voice,
    God Save the Queen!!!

Any one else want to express their patriotism with a national anthem or two?

I dont like our National anthem, sure the Queen's swell and all.

But it seems a bit poofy.

Plus what happens with King Charles takes over?

'God save our Gracious Que-... I mean King!'

Some lyrics change, but yes that's what happens when a King is sits on the throne of Great Britain. In the days of the last King of Great Britain, George VI, it was God Save the King. In fact, I know both lyrics. But that isn't surprising, eh

    God save our gracious King
    Long live our noble King
    God save the King
    Send him victorious,
    Happy and glorious,
    Long to reign over us:
    God save the King

    O Lord, our God, arise,
    Scatter his enemies,
    And make them fall.
    Confound their politics,
    Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
    God save us all.

    Thy choicest gifts in store,
    On him be pleased to pour;
    Long may he reign:
    May he defend our laws,
    And ever give us cause
With heart and voice to sing
    God save the King.

Why should we call on a non-specific deity to bail out the non-elected spongers?

I believe most national anthems ask for blessings of one kind or another.

    Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika
    Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo,
    Yizwa imithandazo yethu,
    Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo.
    Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso,
    O fedise dintwa la matshwenyeho,
O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso,
Setjhaba sa South Afrika - South Afrika.

Uit die blou van onse hemel,
Uit die diepte van ons see,
    Oor ons ewige gebergtes,
    Waar die kranse antwoord gee,

Sounds the call to come together,
    And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
    In South Africa our land.

    Translation-----

    Lord, bless Africa
May her spirit rise high up
    Hear thou our prayers
    Lord bless us.

    Lord, bless Africa
    Banish wars and strife
    Lord, bless our nation
    Of South Africa.

Ringing out from our blue heavens
From our deep seas breaking round
    Over everlasting mountains
    Where the echoing crags resound

Sounds the call to come together,
    And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
    In South Africa our land.

Just to let you know- to symbolize our many cultures, the national anthem is on 4 languages.

1st stanza is in xhosa and zulu
    2nd stanza is in sesotho
    3rd stanza is in afrikaans
    4th is in english

    Ah, anthem thread again.
Ok, here goes Croatian anthem, written in 1835, music composed in 1846, first performed as Croatian anthem in 1891. So much for uninteresting data.

    Lijepa Naša Domovino

    Lijepa naša domovino,
    Oj junačka zemljo mila,
    Stare slave djedovino,
    Da bi vazda sretna bila!

    Mila, kano si nam slavna,
    Mila si nam ti jedina.
    Mila, kuda si nam ravna,
    Mila, kuda si planina!

    Teci Dravo, Savo teci,
    Nit' ti Dunav silu gubi,
    Sinje more svijetu reci,
    Da svoj narod Hrvat ljubi.

    Dok mu njive sunce grije,
    Dok mu hrašće bura vije,
    Dok mu mrtve grob sakrije,
    Dok mu živo srce bije!

    Our Beautiful Homeland

    Our beautiful homeland,
    O so fearless and gracious,
    Our fathers' ancient glory,
    May you be blessed forever.

Dear, you are our only glory,
Dear, you are our only one,
    Dear, we love your plains,
    Dear, we love your mountains.

    Drava, Sava, keep on flowing,
Danube, do not lose your vigor,
Deep blue sea, tell the world,
That a Croat loves his people.

Whilst his fields are kissed by sunshine,
Whilst his oaks are whipped by wild winds,
Whilst his dear ones go to heaven,
    Whilst his live heart beats.

It seems English translation has blessings. But in Croatian "May you be blessed for ever" is literally translated as "May you be happy/joyful forever". There is no bliss word in it in original.
    Has signatures turned off.

America has a pretty nice anthem, one of the better ones I've heard (although nobody can beat France, German, and Italy).

    Oh, say can you see,
    By the dawn's early light,
    What so proudly we hailed
    At the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars,
    Through the perilous fight,
    O'er the ramparts we watched
    Were so gallantly streaming?
    And the rockets' red glare,
    The bombs bursting in air,
    Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there.
    O, say, does that
    Star-Spangled Banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave?

    Ave María, cuando serás mía
Si me quisieras, todo te daría
    Ave María, cuando serás mía
Al mismo cielo, yo te llevaría.

    Ave María...
    Dime si serás mía...
    Dímelo ya...
    Ave María...

    Amhrán na bhFiann

    A Soldier's Song

    Sinne Fianna Fáil
    Atá faoi gheall ag Éirinn
    Buíon dár slua
    Thar toinn do ráinig chugainn
    Faoi mhóid bheith saor
    Seantír ár sinsear feasta
Ní fhágfar faoin tiorán ná faoin tráill
Anocht a théam sa bhearna bhaoil
Le gean ar Ghaeil chun báis nó saoil
Le gunna scréach faoi lámhach na bpiléar
Seo libh canaídh Amhrán na bhFiann

    Translation

    Soldiers are we
Whose lives are pledged to Ireland
    Some have come
From a land beyond the wave
    Sworn to be free
No more our ancient sire land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave
Tonight we man the bearna baol
In Erin’s cause, come woe or weal
’Mid cannon’s roar and rifles’ peal
    We’ll chant a soldier’s song
    First Child of Noble
I've had my fun and that's all that matters

    Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
    Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,
    Dros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.

    (Cytgan)

Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad.
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau.

Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,
    Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn, i'm golwg sydd hardd;
Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si
    Ei nentydd, afonydd, i mi.

    (Cytgan)

Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwlad tan ei droed,
Mae hen iaith y Cymry mor fyw ag erioed,
Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,
    Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad.

I rather dislike my national anthem.
We need something that sounds more like this:

Its in Russian but it sounds a whole lot better than what Canada is stuck with. *borrows hammer and sickle from Stalin

This anthem caused God to forgive the Russian people for their atheism.
