Everytime I fall behind, I lose the "Most Advanced" status.
What exactly IS Production?

buildings that u build, the more u build the more "Advanced" u are.
I think it applies to everything you produce e.g units & buildings. It measures the growth of your civilization.
I saw, I bought, I played
Does it measure total buildings or how many produced in said turn?
Total buildings. If you look at the graph you will see it rises constantly when you build a new building every turn.
I saw, I bought, I played
I believe it also measures it in comparison to other factions and how far along the tier your units and buildings are.
"If you can't get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you'd best teach it to dance." - George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950)
Production is a measure of your total income per turn, which is affected by farms, mining and trade. Ports, farms, grain exchanges, warehouses etc. effect prodution.
Most advanced is a measure of the top tier buildings everyone has, so if you have 1 "Blacksmith" built, and everyone else only has a "Leather Tanner" built, you are more advanced then them with respect to amouries. The total just takes into account every building series in the game, and compares the repective factions top level of each series to pick the most advanced.
Cheers!
Production is determined by how much money you spend during each turn. How much money you have is in the financial graph. When my empire grows very large I sometimes forget to check construction/recruitment and settlements remain idle and I can see this in my production graph by a sharp decline. During this time total turn income doesn't change too much, it actually rises because I don't build anything.
Whatever it is, for me it is an aggravating, misleading, distraction.
Ignore it then and just right click on the messages when they come down the left of the screen.
pwijnands and Snizel have the explanations that jibe most closely with what I think production is, and how 'advanced faction' is determined. However, I have not studied this closely. I know that military unit production figures into the total for 'production'.
But 'most advanced faction', 'wealth' and 'production' are only general indicators of your faction's health. I smile when my faction gets it, take note of the other factions which get it, but otherwise don't worry about it. The factors I look at are number of territories, population and military strength. Even though my faction typically ranks very, very low financially in the early to mid game, my faction is simultaneously the most economically powerful: It is just that I spend almost everything I've got on buildings (and units) which will help me earn more money.
If you are ranked high financially in the early game, then I contend that you are being a very poor manager of your money. If you are pounding every penny you can spare into economic and infrastructure buildings (like I do) then you should see the 'most advanced faction' notice every once in a while. The turn-by-turn 'production numbers are, IMHO, almost useless information.

I agree financial ranking is completely useless as it simply means "money in the bank" and says nothing of income.
I also receive the "most advanced faction" message every other turn, along with one other faction (usually the Byzatines).
Production is farm income and trade income added together. Just open your Faction Ranking Tab for Production and your Finacial Overview Tab simultaniously. You will see that the income for "Farming" and "Trade" add up to the number on the left hand side of the Production Graph corresponding to your current level of Production.
Cheers!
Yup, I double checked that, just in case... producing units has no effect on Production, nor does producing buildings other than farms, markets and the like.... Nor does changing your taxes, building mines, or having Merchants on resources.
It is only farm income and trade income, so only getting trade agreements, building ports, farms, markets etc affect this measure....
Cheers!
