    Default Alexander worth the cost?

I've heard of Alexander, and that it does have a few good, interesing features, such as improved AI and other stuff. I've also heard that it removes some features, such as night battles and swimming. Can any of this be confirmed, and is this worth the $10, especially if I never touch the campaign?

Alexander is worth the money if you like the new campaign system, using turns instead of years. The factions are not varied and are dissapointing, multiplayer is useless and the AI is not improved in any way.
Still, there are a number of good mods that use Alexander and it can be fun for ten bucks.

    Greetings mate,
the Alexander expansion is definitely not worth the purchase in my opinion. However, if you have a fascination with the era, you should get it.

Well, I'm quite sure it does take away the option of night fighting, but not sure of swimming. Alexander was never a night fighter anyway.

I think the game would've benefited from adding a few Greek factions to the Multiplayer Custom Battle mode. Also some Scythians and Thracians wouldn't hurt either. Or maybe even some contemporary factions that he never faced in battle would've been a welcome addition such as the Celts, Romans, Samnites, etc.

    And definitely more maps.

Well actually, Alexander did launch a night attack on the Illyrians in the Balkans.

I know it goes against what he said to Parmenio at Gaugamela, but Alexander can do whatever he wants

I say it's definately worth the cost. The AI is much, much better, and there is alot of awesome mods for it like LOTR-TW, Gods and fighting men and the upcoming 300 mod by Halie Satanus.
"So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show."

Now here is a wise man...
I have no idea what the Vanilla Alexander campaign plays like....but i do know this...It's worth just getting to play Gods & Fighting Men a mod by Master Of None...Not to mention the upcoming mod by Halie Satanus as Ephialtes stated. Check them out if your interested.....

Yes, Alexander is worth the cost. I don't play anymore, but it's still sacred to my Alexander the Great-collection.

Macedon's unit selection is superb. The game designers should've added Thessalian Cavalry and proper Hypaspists to the original R:TW. Even in Rome's time, Macedon still had access to those units.

    The big drawbacks are:
    - no one plays it online
    - there's only 4 playable factions online

    If you're a fan of Alexander, then it's a must-buy.

It's worth. The game itself is as bad as vanilla RTW, but you can play any RTW mods with it with better AI and other good things.

Well, I'm not a heavy Alexander fan, but I would consider it for mods. I wouldn't mind a better AI either.

No way to reinable night battles then? I suspect its a hardcoded thing.

What is this new turn instead of years system?

You have a hundred turns when the game begins and in those hundred turns you need to control thirty regions. The turns count down so you'll be forced to play fast, this to emulate the speed at which Alexander conquered the world.

From what ive heard it sounds like an interesting Epic Blitz battles system so it has replayability if you like huge battles (I personally love them) . But kind of a disappointment in terms of variety .

Well in my opinion the game itself isn't too fun but there are some really good mods for it like gods and fighting men, Lotr-TW and an upcoming 300 mod by Halie Satanus.

Theres also been a couple of other threads like this recently, I suggest you check them out.

I merged the two "Alexander" threads together because they were identical in nature.

I've had it for a while and it was worth a quick play through--I'm a big Macedon/Alexander fan so it was fun to follow in the steps of a Great.

LOTR:TW is a great mod, and sadly, I've lost my cd key so I can't play anymore (reformats) so I can't try the two new mods that look brilliant.

Tip to people buying it online: write down the purchase information, the cd key, and the registration name, all that, and put it with your RTW discs. I wish I had done that.
