I'm more a fan of early-to-mid 70s prog to be honest. King Crimson, Yes, Procol Harum and Van der Graaf Generator. Though Rush has been quite good so far.

well, if your in for modern prog rock, there's some bands that are just as good as the 70's legends:

Isildurs Bane - MIND volume 1
    Anglagard - Hybris

    there's also prog metal, obviously:

Dream Theater (you probably already know them)
    Symphony X
    Pain of salvation
    Opeth (prog-death metal)

and these are just the most famous ones.

In my experience(limited in the genre as it is) most bands with LOTR references are either ****ing awesome, or severely lacking.

I have two D Theater albums, tho I never listen to them anymore. Singers voice irritates me. Syphony X and Pain of Salvation were both good, I've listened to them before. I wouldn't change the station they were on, but then again I don't listen to the radio. And I bought Blackwater Park like 3 years ago and to this day it is still one of my fav albums. I'm trying to learn how to play Harvest on acoustic.

There isn't much hair metal influence in PWs sound. They don't really even sound like any other prog metal band (except some Fates Warning, if you know them) and in some of their non-metal songs a bit like Jethro Tull
Now that I've heard this I will be much more enthusiastic in my listening.

Anybody got any good new prog along King Crimson, Tool, Faith No MOre lines?

My apologies for not watching the videos posted in this thread yet. It is on my list of things to due once I get myself to the right state of mind.

This is why I love this discussion, because even though I'm an avid fan of K. Crimson and Yes, I've never heard of the other two. Now I have more music to look into.

Psychotic Waltz - If you ask me, not just the most underrated prog (metal) band ever, but the most underrated band ever. And my favourite.
I will never deny that prog metal is a field of immense talent, (mike portnoy is by far one of the best drummers of all time.) However it's the traces of 80's hair metal still in their music that sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me.

And is there some special way to embed a video file in this forum, just copying and pasting it from youtube doesn't seem to work:tool:

Procol Harum and VdGG are both great, especially VdGG.

Copy the part of the youtube video address after the 'v='
    youtube. com/watch?v=XJcRzfurefQ

Then paste it inside [youtube.]XJcRzfurefQ[/youtube.] (without the full stops)

Anekdoten - Great King Crimson-influenced modern prog band

Octy's already mentioned Van der Graaf Generator

Camel are another good underrated band

Gentle Giant is great. Then there is Peter Gabriel era Genesis, Atomic Rooster, and the Soft Machine (though they are technically more jazzfusion/Canterbury). Rick Wakeman's solo stuff is great too.

well, if you like opeth's Blackwater Park, you should try these:

Edge Of Sanity - Crimson (prog-death, very similiar to opeth)
Haggard - Awaiking the Centuries (symphonic death metal)
Orphaned Land - Mabool (ethnic death metal)

Word. Though I will ask, are they all growl and no harmonic vocals? Cause that **** really burns my ***. In fact I haven't listened to any other Opeth album cause I'm terrified that the soft vocals and acoustics(what endeared me to Opeth) will be non-existent. Although I literally listen to music of all categories (Hey **** off Thunder rolls was a good song), I am extremely picky as to what music warrants a full sit down start to finish album listen.

All of their albums have clean vocals except Orchid which I think is only growls (though I may be wrong). Damnation is all sung but isn't metal at all.

Edge Of Sanity - Crimson is mostly growls with a bit of singing. Great album though. Orphaned Land has both and Haggard I don't know.

P.S.S. You really should try Isildurs Bane. It is a very emotional and atmospheric prog sound (mostly instumental), sort of like classical music, but not as bombastic and conservative, and much more forward-thinking. Try listening to it (with headphones, of course) when your just lying down on the grass, chilling.
Will do man! +rep. Though I've said it before, if I. Bane is your style, check out this link. Then check their myspace. Awesome. Prog archives rated thier S.U.S.A.R album the most influential prog album of the past decade second only to Lateralus.

I'm already familiar with the Indukti dudes. very high quality prog-metal, definitely, but not as mind-blowing as many people consider them to be. the problem is that they concentrate too much on the the tried-and-tested Dream Theater formula exclusively, without adding enough original touch.
overall, they are an improved version of dream theater, which is not bad at all, but not as good as they can become if they take their own direction.
looking forward to their next album.

What about gorguts, solefald and arcturus?

Gorguts first 2 albums are quite standard good tech death but obscura is a amazing avant garde death metal affair. From wisdom to hate is another interesting tech/avant garde death metal album.

Solefald is avant garde. Combines a ******** of genres. Personal favorite is red for fire.

Arcturus is another avant garde band.

    Arcturus = genius

I only have Solefad's 'Black For Death', can't say I like it much though to be honest.

    Gorguts I've never listened to.
