how do you train your general?

I was wondering how everyone trains there generals to become the best. I really want to see what you guys say.

I have mine go out solo and smash any and every small stack they can get away with while attempting to keep his casualties to a minimum.

The same applies for Rome and Medieval II:
Put them on the end of a bridge with spearmen and missile units and have them slaugther thousands upon thousands of the enemy each turn. You'll have several high-star, blood thirsty maniacs after this.

Going after those routing units and taking them as prisoners is a good method for training units (cavalry for most of course) and your general: No risk, but counting towards the number of defeated enemies. Very effective in a "normal combat situation".
